         <description><![CDATA[<div>OVERALL: They achieved a number of firsts in World War I--to arrive in France, to be at the front, to fire at enemy, to raid, to suffer casualties and to be cited in general orders.<br>The 1st Infantry Division was the first division to be sent to Europe in 1942 of July. <br>Led the invasion of French North Africa near Oran, Algeria, on November 8, 1942.<br>Scored the first American defeat of a German unit, the 10th Panzer Division, at the Battle of El Guettar in 1943. The division had become a battle-hardened unit.<br>On July 10, 1943, the 1st Infantry Division participated in its second amphibious operation during the invasion of Sicily. </div>]]></description>

The shoulder patch is composed of a <strong>red</strong> numeral <strong>one</strong> centered on a green shield and was adopted in 1918. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The commander was, MG Terry de la Mesa Allen. <br>He was promoted to the rank of major general and given command of the 1st Infantry Division. </div><div>Allen's brash and informal leadership style won him much respect and loyalty from the men in his division, who wholeheartedly adopted his emphasis on aggressiveness and combat effectiveness rather than military appearances. </div>]]></description>
