Why is that? Why was everyone just star-struck at the sight? There just seems to be a lot around having a baby in general. When Offred went to the doctor he offered to get her pregnant. Also saying that she’d die if she didn’t get pregnant. With it being more recent there are people, like many of our characters, that still remember the time before. She full on assaulted Aunt Elizabeth, took her clothes, hid her in the basement, took her pass, and left. The guards didn’t even look at her. That alone shows that she held her self with confidence and little emotion. But he of course has wants of his own. Though he seems to be able to put them aside, for now. Even with guilt, you can hurt those you feel guilty about. With the way they have their society built around modesty, I would have thought they would marry them off at around 18 or 20. Especially in the way the handmaidens were, as they beat the man to death. Rightfully so though, he raped not only a woman but a pregnant woman. Then with the way, they hold pregnant women so highly one would assume that no one would touch them, but here we are.
