There is a report that as William disembarked his ship he tripped and feel ; lots of his men took this as a bad omen but William quickly turned it around by saying "see my lords, I have taken possession of England with both my hands and what is mine, is yours." 

William told his men to seize and destroy as much land as possible to encourage Harold and the Saxons to march faster towards the battle therefore improving William's chances further of winning the battle. 

Due to William's good tactics he set up his men in a strong position but later on realised that heb must move as harold had not reached them yet. 

Harold and his troops were north on London so Harold made the decision that must have been more about his unending desire to crush the Normans than actual tactics. He decided to march South and reach London by the 6th October meaning that him and hos troops had marched 190 miles in just  8 days this meant that his troops would be tired.  

Harold used is great location knowledge of England to pick to set up on Senlac hill where he was on the top of the hill. Harold had a core of elite housecarls filled in with hired fyrd as the rest of them would not have been able to get from Stamford bridge (Victory for Saxons) to Senlac hill in time. His layout was nearly 1/2 a mile long. 

Williams troops were on the left his troops mainly from Brittany in the centre were his troops from Normandy and on the Right were hired soldiers. In each section at the front was the archers, then foot soldiers then Knights.
