To me, the shell of a sea turtle represents strength and sturdiness. My mom is the strongest, most reliable person I know. She has done a lot for me and my brother which is why I thought my wall relief would be a good token of appreciation for her. I believe that a turtle represents my mom because of the subtle yet intricate detail that they both possess. In some cultures, the turtle represents wisdom and knowledge. My mom is a community college teacher and teaches her students everyday. But she also teaches me important things about myself and how I should navigate the world. I decided to make her a sea turtle instead of a land turtle because she swam in college and I know that she is very proud of this accomplishment, even though she won’t brag about it. The background of sand is used to contrast the detail that I put into the designs on the fins, heads, and shell. I didn't want a plain background but also didn't want it to take away from the detailing. The reason I decided on sand for the background is because it is typically warmer than the ocean. The warmth that radiates off of the sand is representative of the warmth that my mom provides. She is a safe and comforting space to me and my brother and I hope she knows how much I love her.
