Karen Liang Wu: Based on this week’s lecture, anti-modern is not just something vintage or old-fashioned, but something that reacts against modernity. This is a family photo that was taken at a photography studio when I was a baby. I first encountered this photo in my father’s wallet when I was around 6, and later kept it in my own wallet as a meaningful object—it was the first image where I saw my whole family together. Ever since I got my first wallet, I’ve always carried this photo with me. I chose this object because it reminds me of when photos were formal and physical, not just quick digital files. The yellow edges show its age and the chemical changes over time. Unlike pictures that we have in our phones that are easily taken and forgotten, this studio portrait belongs to an older tradition of family representation and memory.

Archery target paper

Karen Liang Wu: This is a picture of me and my friend when we went to Manhattan for archery. We didn’t take photos while we were shooting, but this is our target sheet with the results. I picked this picture because archery goes back thousands of years and connects to old traditions of hunting and survival. We don’t really use it for that anymore, but it’s still around today as a sport and hobby. To me, it feels antimodern because, unlike high-tech sports, archery keeps that sense of tradition and connects us back to the past.
