As the son of the ranch owner, Curley thinks that he is one of the most powerful people on the ranch. However, its shown that in the story, Slim acts as his superior as he was given the nickname "Prince of the Ranch." Since he used to be a lightweight boxer, he is very easy to pick a fight to try and show how powerful he is, but in chapter three this just shows how powerless he truly is. When he picks a fight with Lennie, Lennie manages to win the fight easily by breaking his hand. Chapter 3 is a indicator that well Curley may act like the most powerful man on the ranch, he is actually not that powerful. "Curley’s fist was swinging when Lennie reached for it. The next minute Curley was flopping like a fish on a line, and his closed fist was lost in Lennie’s big hand."(Steinbeck, 31)

Candy is seen as a powerless person because he is missing a hand, and can only sweep and do other menial jobs. He's worried that they ranch will eventually get rid of him, and he'll be alone and old. Due to these inconveniences, Candy is looked as a powerless character.

Throughout the whole of chapter 3 of Mice and Men, Slim, the one who is next in charge of the boys after the boss, is always seen as a character who has power, Slim is never seen as powerless. An instance where Slim had power is when the Curley wanted to fight Slim because, he thought that Slim was talking to his wife. However, once the characters actually confronted each other, Curley realized he was in the wrong and Curley began to seem like the weaker man as he began to apologize which was a first. "Curley said, 'Well, I didn’t mean nothing, Slim. I just ast you.' Slim said, 'Well, you been askin’ me too often. I’m gettin’ God damn sick of it. If you can’t look after your own God damn wife, what you expect me to do about it? You lay offa me.' 'I’m jus’ tryin’ to tell you I didn’t mean nothing,' said Curley. 'I jus’ thought you might of saw her."'(Steinbeck, 31)

Lennie is seen mainly seen as a powerless character in the novel. Considering that Lennie heavily depends on George, Lennie struggles to do anything without him. But in chapter 3, Lennie and Curley got into a little scuffle and, it wasn't until George told Lennie to actually fight back was Lennie able to break Curley's hand. "Curley was white and shrunken by now, and his struggling had become weak. He stood crying, his fist lost in Lennie’s paw."(Steinbeck, 31)
Lennie is never looked at as a powerful character but, it is clear that Lennie has the potential to be the most powerful character in the novel.
