* Before they could begin inventing, the wright brothers first had to research the information available to them at the time.
* they obtained technical papers regarding knowledge of aerodynamics.
* they used the works of Cayley, and Langley, as well as the hang-gliding flights of Otto Lilienthal.
* they analyzed the previous problems of those who attempted to fly and worked out their own solutions.
* they observed the flight of large birds.
* Finally they came to the conclusion that controlling the aircraft would be the most difficult part in designing their invention.

* the wright brothers´ ideas for flight control were tested through aircrafts they dubbed as kites.
* they chose to use north carolina as the testing ground for these kites thanks to its consistent high winds.
* they correctly reasoned that a free flying vehicle would need to be controlled through the primary axes; roll, pitch, and yaw.
* their aircraft was built with three movable surfaces on the wing, elevator, and rudder.
* control of the surface shape was all up to the pilot.
*these ideas were all tested by glider flights of the aircraft.
