What are the current best methods for water filtration and how do they work?

Some of the most known methods of water purification are boiling, desalination, distillation, and reverse osmosis. Boiling works exactly like it sounds, and is a method that is used to make water slightly safer to drink. Essentially getting the water as hot as possible while keeping most of it liquid may kill bacteria in the water, however most impurities and chemical pollution will remain in the water. Desalination is the full evaporation and condensation of salt water. Collecting the steam of ocean water does make for safe to drink distilled water, or at least a water with a lower lethal dose than ocean water. Distillation is similar to desalination but it separates water from anything, not salt exclusively. The only downside to these methods that yield 100% pure water is that humans should drink mineral water, not distilled. Mineral water is slightly hypertonic and therefore safe to drink in large amounts, however repeated consumption of hypotonic pure water causes cells to swell, disturbs electrolyte levels and can cause brain damage. Finally, reverse osmosis requires a lab to chemically make water from scratch and is not viable as a solution to quench world thirst.

Percentages are a very important form of statistic that is used to measure our SDG, as the objective is universal or 100% access to clean water sources. Statistics like percentage of people who have access to sanitation systems or potable water are important in quantifying the progress we make toward this goal. Also, figures such as number of hospitals with water and soap sanitation and number of pollution related deaths are important. Our SDG can be measured by region, because some areas of the world such as Europe and parts of Asia don’t have issues with universal access to water. The website called SDG6data.org is a great display of the progress we have made thus far.

Again, our SDG needs the most progress in Africa, because many of these communities have no way to purify their water and also pollute it themselves. However more common than death by thirst is death by disease due to not having a continuous source of water to sanitise. The environments without sanitation allow diseases to thrive and take many lives, especially children and elders. In Chad, there is a 1 in 10 chance that a certain death was caused by polluted drinking water

Potable water refers to water that is adequate for human consumption in the long term. Any water that causes health issues or is polluted is non-potable. There are four recognised levels of water purity within potable water. Feed water is what a large part of the developing world relies on, water that is barely clean enough to be consumed with no lasting detriments, but may often be contaminated with visible impurities or not be fully colourless. Carbon filtration and reverse osmosis make up primary grade water, and the other two types are ultra pure waters that are non plausible as a widespread solution. The world has to focus on universal access of barely potable water for everyone before we concern ourselves with mineral concentrations or purity levels

Water filtering is a very important process because it is very hard to determine the quality of Tap water. Most of the times tap water is filtered in a facility before it reaches the user. but the problem with this s that they never test the water wen it goes though the municipal feed lines which most of the times pollute the water even more. The water while it is being distributed it can encounter microorganisms bacteria and viruses that is why it is important to filter your water before drinking. Studies also say that the contaminants of the water can accumulate in the body which in theory could lead humans to suffer form a weaker immune system, cancer, and thyroid hormone disruption.
