I chose this location because Disneyland has always brought up such amazing memories for me, so I wanted to pay respect to the tribe that was driven from the land. This land belongs to the Tongva people. This tribe, like many others, is still suffering from the effects of the pandemic. They seek new emergency relief funds for Native American families.

I chose Exeter, CA because this is where I grew up. There's a small community located a few miles from Exeter called Yokohl Valley that I used to run at when I did in cross country in high school, and surely enough it's named after the Yokuts. One priority for the Indigenous people for this land is to save it and honor its beauty! In 2018, there was a formal withdraw from a new city planned for development on 36,000 acres in Yokohl Valley. It truly is a beautiful scenery, especially in the spring when it's green and when the mountains in the background are visible.

The land is native to the Awaswas people which is a smaller division of the Ohlone. It is now represented by the native Amah Mutsun Tribal Band who are descendants of the Ohlone and Awaswas.
Their most recent priority noted on their website is to regain their responsibility of taking care of the land. Through a Land Trust, the Mutsun Tribal Band now has more oversight into being the stewards and tenders of the land as they would have been traditionally.

I grew up in a town nearby called Greenville, CA and it’s a very dear and close area to me. Not long ago the area was devastated by the Dixie Fires and there’s not much left of the landscape or town.

This land belongs to the Maidu tribe. Their mission statement on their website is as follows, “Our mission is to preserve, protect, and promote the Mountain Maidu Homeland with a united voice. The Maidu Summit Consortium envisions re-acquired ancestral lands as a vast and unique park system dedicated to the purposes of education, healing, protection, and ecosystem management based upon the Maidu cultural and philosophic perspectives, as expressed through traditional ecology.” In 2019 PG&E transferred back 2,325 acres of Maidu land back to their people, which unfortunately was burned during the course of the Dixie Fire. It was really sad to learn that this tribe fought long and hard for some of their core land to be rightfully returned just for it to be burned away. Their website does offer options for volunteer work and donations.

I chose my hometown of San Luis Obispo, specifically the area around my childhood home because my adolescence was heavily spent outdoors. Climbing the hills and exploring the wilderness without a care in the world. Blissfully unaware of the darker side of why we have so much open space.

This land belongs to the Chumash Tribe. Specifically the Northern Chumash or  The yak titʸu titʸu yak tiłhini Tribe. 

What is one current priority for the Indigenous peoples of this land?
The Northern Chumash Tribe is currently using land in Los Osos to hold a sustainable urban farm and are pursuing the creation of a Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary along the coast. With an emphasis on educating the community and increasing their awareness of the Northern Chumash culture.

The reason I choice this location is because I have been to the reservation and have a personal connection to the Warm Springs Tribe. The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs is made up of three different tribes, The Wascoes, The Warm Springs, and The Paiutes. One current priority for the Indigenous peoples of this land is natural resources planning in order to ensure balance protection, usage, and enhancement of all  tribal natural resources.

The land that Magic Mountain is on belongs to the Fernandeño Tataviam tribe and the Chumash tribe. A priority of the Fernandeño Tataviam tribe is to acquire and protect sacred tribal land through the Tataviam Land Conservancy (TLC) so it is still accessible for future generations to come. A priority for the Chumash, along side The Santa Ynez Chumash Environmental Office (SYCEO), aims "to prepare tribal lands for environmental adaptation, to protect and regenerate natural resources, and to cultivate the connection between culture, spirit, and community through collaboration and education" (SYCEO).
