As conditions worsend, many people have been reaching out to indigenous people to create solutions and help manage the forest lands.

These anthropogenic fire practices helped: 
manage their lands
keep massive fires at bay
seasonally revive the land

Their fires did not destroy the forests but just burned the last layer of duff that fell to the forest floor.

The settlers did not trust the Native's methods because they were seen as "not civilized enough."
