         <description><![CDATA[<div>Until 1851, Native peoples had been <strong>annually</strong> setting controlled fires to maintain their land.<br><br>These anthropogenic fire practices helped:&nbsp;<br>manage their lands<br>keep massive fires at bay<br>seasonally revive the land<br><br>Their fires did not destroy the forests but just burned the last layer of duff that fell to the forest floor.&nbsp;<br>Most trees will survive a normal fire, for their bark provides fire resistance.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

The settlers did not trust the Native's methods because they were seen as "not civilized enough." This has led us to extreme overgrowth and forests at risk for massive destructive fires.</div>]]></description>
