Tom is an unwelcoming person. This is seen through the description of his demeanor. From the passage, “a rather hard mouth and a supercilious manner”. Supercilious has a connotation to superiority which implies that he is one to look down on others and puts himself up on a pedastal. Furthermore, “a gruff husky tenor, added to the impression of fractiousness he conveyed.”, implies that he had a rather irritable tone in his voice. This suggests his disdain for other people. Hence, he is an unwelcoming person.

Tom seems to be a very arrogant person, this could be because of his high position in the economy. Nick narrates Tom to be “a national figure in a way,one of those men who reach such an acuye limited excellence at 21 that everything afterward savoured of anti-climax.” Since Tom achieved climbing up the economy at a young age and continued to strive, he is therefore recognised as a successful man. This may feed into Tom’s ego as it is not easy to achieve such a high status in the society at a young age. Therefore we interpret Tom as an arrogant character.

Tom is shown to be very arrogant as he mentioned “Just because I’m stronger and more of a man than you [Nick] are”. This shows that Tom is full of himself and he thinks highly of himself as compared to Nick. He also boasted about his house as shown in “I’ve got a nice place here.” This is to show to the readers that Tom is trying to show his superiority by praising about himself and his house to others.

Tom is a domineering figure. Use of diction through how he "imperatively"guides Nick through his home by the arm and "compelled" him out of the room. This shows that he displays a sense of authority as he is able to urge nick to move out of the room without asking verbally for his consent.

Tom is a self centred and opinionated character. He belived that the world revolves around him because of his “dominant”. The word “dominant” is implied through the dialogue with Nick, it suggests that he believes his race is more powerful, putting it on a pedestal, as if it puts him above many others around him. In addition to the bigger picture of racial issues in the novel, the book mentioned, “The Rise of Coloured Empires” acts as an important symbol, suggesting perhaps America’s future from that point in the 1920s (the era in which the novel is set). The “Coloured Empires” represent people of colpur entering the United States, and of course the word “rise” means that they are surfacing in a mainly white American societly, thus it might be seen as a danger to people like Tom who are extremely opinionated and conservative.

He who is callous, is also restless.

Tom is callous.
He is depicted by Nick using imagery to have a body possessing "enormous power" and it was a "cruel body" suggesting his physique was very masculine and dominating.
Tom is egocentric.
In his mannerism towards Nick, he informs Nick that his "opinion on matters" wasn't final although Tom was "stronger and more of a man than (Nick)". This strongly implicates how Tom tries to establish a sort of male hierachy such that he is at the top of it.

Tom is restless.
From the usage of language such as the fact that Tom and Daisy "drifted here and there" seemingly forever "seeking a little wistfully for the dramatic turbulence" suggest that Tom felt no purpose on life and he was trying to find some sort of stimulation in his life. Although he is "enormously wealthy" however he seeks something more than wealth cant buy-to fulfil his purpose in life. He even reads the book "The Rise of The Coloured Empires" in an attempt to have some sort of direction in life. He claims as a part of the "dominant race" it is essential for him to "watch out" to prevent "these other races" from controlling things.
This is Tom plainly trying to find a sort of agenda to work towards to give him direction. This is perhaps partly why Tom cheats on his wife with his mistress, Myrtle to create some sort of entertainment in his flatline life that leaves him with "restless eyes".

By Irdina and Megan 19A302
Thank you for reading!!!
