The name 'Orang Asli' means the 'original people' or the 'first people'. It is stated that there are approximately 60,000 Orang Asli still living is Malaysia, 60% of which still resides in the rainforest. The other 40% are living along or by the coast. Each Orang Asli groups have their own language and culture, they believe that they are different from other groups. Their language has been said to be closely related to Burma, Indo-China and Thailand languages, which historically link to them together. Orang Asli are classified into three groups which are the Negrito, Senoi and Orang Melayu Asli, each three have many subcultures under them. 

The 'Negrito' group has been suggested to originate from Papua New Guinea and East Africa, which can be seen by appearance of dark skin and frizzy hair texture. The other Orang Asli group have lighter skin and also straight hair. The Negritos' mainly live in the North and North East of Peninsular Malaysia, they mostly reside in jungles and they live a semi nomadic lifestyle. It is said that they arrived in Peninsular Malaysia around 8,000 years ago. Their forefathers were hunter and gatherers and lived in caves and rock shelter.

Many Senois' live in Cameron Highlands. Originally from the hills of Vietnam, Cambodia and Northern Thailand. They estimably arrived in Peninsular Malayia about 6,000 to 8,000 years ago.

Umbut Bayas Masak Gulai
 
-       Scrumptious Palm Pith (Sago) curry cooked in bamboo logs
-       Its Pith is the spongy, starch filled center of a palm stem
 
Ketupat
 
-       Rice cakes that are cooked in coconut leaves
-       Coconut leaves are weaved together to form little pockets
-       The pockets are filled with rice and steamed till the rice puffs up and fills the coconut pocket
 
Lemang
 
-       Glutinous rice wrapped in banana leaf and filled into bamboo logs
-       The bamboo logs are then cook to perfection
-       Adding to that, lemang is eaten along with meat curry
 
Ubi Kayu Kennem
 
-       Fritters made of grated tapioca that has been soaked in water for several days until it ferments. Often have it for breakfast or as snacks

 The traditional houses of the Orang Asli are called Rumah gadang (big house). The architecture, construction, internal and external decoration, and the functions of the house reflect the culture and values of the Orang Asli. It is usually owned by the women of the family who live there and is passed from mother to daughter.

. The Orang Asli villages specialise in producing handicrafts such as woven sugarcane and reed purses, gold and silver jewellery using filigree and granulation techniques, woven songket textiles, wood carving, embroidery and pottery.

  • Fishing, hunting and agriculture are one of the main occupations
  • The blowpipes used by them for hunting monkeys and birds are extremely accurate
  • Orang Asli people work in towns and cities
  • Semi-nomadic, preferring to take advantage of the seasonal bounties of the forest. 

    • The Blowpipe is made of bamboo, the mouthpiece is made from Pamar, which is a resin from Dipterocarp tree. Darts are made from split leaf stalks or Arenga Palm Cone. It is light weight and the tip is coated with lethal coat of Ipol tree sap ( Antiaris Toxicaria ) carried in closed bamboo tube. As for the end of the dart, a fluffy wool is attached, which is made out of tree bark.
