Production Process

Flax is ready for harvest when the stalk begins turning yellow and the seeds turn brown. The stems are pulled up with the roots attached. Then, they are left out to dry for several weeks until they are ready for the seeds to be removed (threshing). Fibers are then secured from the inner layer of the stalks in a process called retting. The straw that results from retting is then dried, cured, and scutched. After that, they are heckled (run over a bed of nails to separate the long fibers from the short), which prepares them for the spinning process. Flax is spun finely, resulting in a thin yarn. The yarn is then woven into sheets, and the linen products are made from them.

Linen is fully biodegradable and compostable. When breaking down, it releases no harmful chemicals into the atmosphere and enhances the soil. While growing, the flax plant consumes a modest amount of water and uses minimal chemicals to grow and produce. The linen material resulting from it lasts long, and the fibers are strong. In addition, the deep roots of the flax plant pull CO2 from the environment, which makes the atmosphere healthier. Lastly, the production process from cultivation to material requires less energy than synthetic fabrics.
