For the first InTASC Standard, I included some tutoring lesson plans I had created for a student. As most all educators should know, learning varies from student to student and is impacted by their cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical knowledge/needs. When tutoring, I had to keep in mind all five of these aspects for my one student to design a lesson that would be effective for their specific needs and would allow them the most opportunity for growth.

For the second InTASC Standard, I included a SIOP lesson plan. SIOP lesson plans are primarily used when designing a lesson for English Language Learners (ELL's). This lesson specifically focused on the prepositions 'in' and 'on'. This is a difficult concept for students who are native English speakers, so imagine how difficult it would be for non-native English speakers. I had to keep a variety of things in mind. For example, some of my students are visual learners, so I had to make sure to have visual representations. Other of my students are auditory, so I needed to ensure my lesson was clear and concise when speaking. I also had to keep in mind that the examples I used were authentic, because some of these students might not have connections being on an airplane or a boat. Some cultures that were represented in my class were taught to not participate in class, I needed to be sure to either respect those students 'shy' mentality, or ensure them this was a safe and comfortable place for them to speak. So, though my lesson had one main objective, I had many little differences that needed to be taken into consideration for the students and the group.

For this standard I have included both a classroom design as well as my classroom management philosophy. Both of these were assigned during EN 466 (Classroom Management). The classroom design is based on my ideal first grade classroom. Ultimately, what I have learned throughout my numerous observations and classes is that every class you have will need to have it's own plan. Of course it is always good to have a framework, however, it is crucial to be able to adapt management and design to fit the student's needs. My management for a kindergarten class is going to look different than my management for a third grade class. However, I do wholeheartedly believe in restorative practices and talk about it more in detail in my classroom management philosophy.

I truly believe an engaging lesson plan is one of the most effective classroom management techniques. Every lesson plan I create is always thought out for the students I have at the time or revised for my current class to ensure it is appropriate for each student and to make modifications where necessary. I believe these four artifacts show my growth as the semester progressed as well as demonstrates my knowledge of the class and my students needs as I got to know them better.

For this standard I included a SIOP lesson plan I created for a 3rd grade class. This class was a normal 3rd grade class, but also had many ESL students in it. For this lesson I took a long time planning what students might need to be successful. This particular skill is actually a standard way below their grade, but students were still struggling with it. One of the best classroom management tools is an engaging lesson plan, so planning instruction is absolutely crucial. I wanted to ensure every student would be reached during this lesson and tried to ensure it was engaging and appropriate for the students as a whole.

For this standard I included a lesson plan that integrated theater with literacy. I decided to put this lesson here because my strategy was to use movement to help process a concept and move it to long term memory. This lesson allows for students to immerse themselves in the text and is a hands on way to explore reading. My lesson is very 'vocal' and lists exactly what my instruction includes (informal pre-assessment, lesson, formative assessment).

It is essential for educators to keep exploring ways to learn and grow. As promoters of life long learners, it's crucial that we ourselves are just that! My time student teaching has given me some wonderful opportunities to explore ways to continue educating myself on what hot topics are buzzing about education. One of those opportunities was the Fire Up conference at Grand Valley. I listened to five speakers talk about numerous different topics that all apply to education. This opportunity has allowed for me to build some resources as well as encourage me to look for programs like this every year to attend. For my artifacts I have included the Fire Up agenda as well as a personal growth log that includes some all staff meetings I attended during my time student teaching, as well as a regional professional development day.

During my student teaching at Vanguard, I learned how to effectively work with a team of teachers. There a three kindergarten teachers, and every Monday we meet together for roughly 45 minutes to talk about what we will be teaching the following weeks, what standards we are aligning with, and new ideas we'd like to implement. We also worked together to ensure parents were kept in the loop on the big things happening in their children's lives. Attached I have included one of our News Letters home to display exactly what that looks like. This professional collaboration is essential to ensuring our students are receiving quality instruction and we as teachers are gaining fresh perspectives and ideas.

Some students have a preconceived notion that school is boring and pointless. It is imperative to establish learning as something fun and even enjoyable. I want my students to ask questions and seek answers. Its crucial to foster their imagination and let them be creative every chance they get. For this standard I have included a lesson plan that does just this. This lesson mixes literacy with technology and lets the students create a visual representation of the text for themselves. The lesson promotes classroom community by allowing students to share their work on their blog (using seesaw), and communicate with each other both face to face during the lesson, and over technology commenting on their friends posts.

Part of that is allowing students to explore and use technology as a resource for a different learning experience. The lesson attached for this Standard includes a web-quest for students to navigate their own learning. For the project portion, students are able to decide if they would like to make a physical version of their assignment (with paper), or a digital version using a program of their choice. A picture of what the web-quest looks like is included on a page at the bottom of the lesson plan.

I think it is extremely important for students to have a global perspective and learn how to interact with people from around the world. For this standard I have included a lesson that allows students to utilize a well known and trustworthy site to get a pen pal from somewhere else on the globe. The great thing is this allows students to gain that global perspective, as well as have an authentic reason to write! The first artifact is a list of resources that I can refer to. It has tons of different blogs from some wonderful teachers, websites that are useful when teaching, books I'd like in my classroom, and some other odd and end items. I believe it is crucial to constantly expand your resources to help you grow. My second artifact is my professional growth log. During the regional PD day we talked in length about how to use websites from our district to read test results. At the Fire Up conference I also went to a seminar exploring how to use technology in a k-5 environment.

Artifact #7
This lesson was really great, because it shows just how much I progressed from the beginning of the year to the end since it's the same subject as my first lesson. During the months in between these two lessons, I have had the opportunity to add my own spin on things. One of the things I wanted to change for morning work, was how the students completed it. The do the whole front side completely independent. I have lights with colored fish that match their table colors and when their light is on they may come up and check their work with me. I also implemented a doorbell and anytime the doorbell rings they drop whatever is in their hands, put their hands on their head, turn their voices off, and put their eyes on me. This was a very successful lesson and I was very happy with how it went.
