A "Truly radical change agent"

Nelson Mandela is seen as a truly radical change agent, because he led the South Africans from their closed-mind world view, that only the white people are full acceptable human beings to starting to accept the black people as an equal part of their population. He was a great promoter of non-violent changes and wanted to help South Africa to be an united nation, with every person in the country being a part of it and not excluding anyone. He wanted to improve the situation for all black people.

A more opened worldview

Between 1948 and 1991, after the national party gained power in South Africa, a public discrimination of the black inhabitants was controlling the country. Non-white South Africans, although they were the majority of the population, were forced to live in separate areas, go to different schools and many more. The government tried to minimize the contact of white and non-white South Africans. With Nelson Mandela and all the other black people who fought with him for equality for all inhabitants of South Africa, the white inhabitants began to understand, that there is nothing different between the black and the white people and started to see them as equals. Even though some people still show hostility towards the non-white people and also the other way round, it is nothing you can compare with the situation from back then.

Personal Risks

Nelson Mandela was the leader of the anti-apartheid change and as so he took personal risks for the wellbeing of all South Africans. He spent 27 years on Robben Island, a jail in South Africa. With many other black people, he got arrested for political offenses. Nevertheless, he never lost his faith in a better and fairer South Africa. He believed in the power of freedom and he knew that the black people would fight for their freedom. Although violence was always present and seen as a weapon you should fight with, he understood, that violence can’t stop violence. As so, he wanted the people (and especially the black people had been difficult on following Mandela’s second demand) to meet each other in peace and forgiveness. He always held on to his demand of forgiveness although not all black South Africans had the same opinion. They wanted to take revenge on the white inhabitants for what they had done to them over all the years.

He and all the other freedom-fighters challenged what was going on in their country. They started to let the inhabitants of South Africa realise how separated the non-white South Africans were from the white South Africans and how wrong that was. With their words and actions, they wanted the people to show that all human beings must be treated as equals and that no one is more worth than someone else. We’re all just the way we are and must be accepted and treated equally.

He avoided what most people aren’t able to avoid: revenge. I think we can learn a lot from him and his attitude.

His worldview was full of forgiveness and living with each other as equals and in peace. However, the worldview he had to deal with wasn’t that good looking for him. He was a non-white inhabitant of South Africa and as one of those, he was oppressed by the apartheid that was controlling the country. It isn’t really sure which religion he followed. Most people agree with the statement, that he was Christian, but there are theories, in which he could have also been a Jehovah’s Witness, as his sister, first wife and many relatives, or a Methodist, because his school was a Methodist church school. Because his confession is unexplained, we can’t say if his religion influenced him in his actions or if it came from somewhere else.
