Sainte-Marie was born on February 20, 1941 and was adopted and raised by a couple of Mi’kmaq descent in Wakefield, Massachusetts. She is the first and only Indigenous person to win an Oscar. Sainte-Marie had spent 5 years on Sesame Street, and is also believed to be the first woman to breastfeed on national television. In 1997, she founded an educational curriculum named Cradleboard Teaching Project which was created for a better understanding of Native Americans. Her work mainly focuses on issues faced by Indigenous peoples.
