         <title>Slavery comes to North America 1619</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The need for labor in North American colonies was growing, not enough indentured servants, brought in cheaper option which had more people, people began to bring in slaves. First 50 slaves were brought from Africa to the Jamestown settlement in Virginia and it spread throughout the states. It was report that in the 18th century there  were 6-7 million slaves imported to the U.S.<br>After the American Revolution, slavery became less common in Northern states but still at large in the South. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Abolitionism and Underground Railroad 1831</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Abolition efforts originally from slaves and groups of white settlers who opposed slaver (ex: Quakers). Growing cotton industry made slavery vital to the economy. <br>Early 19th century, a new type of radical abolition begun a reaction to the Fugitive Slave Act. Journalist from Massachusetts founded "the Liberator" an abolitionist newspaper in 1831.  Anti-slavery northerners (mostly freed slaves) began helping fugitive slaves escape from southern plantations through a network of safe houses in 1780's.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Civil war and Emancipation 1861</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Spring 1861 conflicts between North and South intensified and erupted into a Civil War. 11 southern states seceded from the US and formed the Confederate States of America. Abraham Lincoln, the first republican president, was elected, pushed some southern states to secede as his views on slavery were known, beginning of civil war wasn't to abolish slavery but maintain the union. <br>1862 Lincoln began to believe that he couldn't avoid question of slavery much longer. January 1st 1863 he issued a preliminary Emancipation proclamation, he justified it as a wartime measure, took bulk of labor from south and got international opinion on the Union's side. When war ended 1865 about 186,000 African american soldiers joined the Union army. Slavery not officially abolished until 13th amendment 1865.</div>]]></description>

Had separate units for white and colored. War's first AA war hero came from Pearl Harbor. Spring 1943 the Tuskegee Airmen began to help saw over 3,000 missions. Important because people recognized if they could fight for country they should be equal. </div>]]></description>
