According to the Mayo Clinic website, Depression is "a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and sometimes you may feel as if life isn't worth living." (Mayo Clinic website citation)

Yoga improves autonomic stress responses and self-regulating coping behaviors. Yoga reduces heart rate, lowers blood pressure, and eases resporations. This can help with coping and depressive symptoms. Hatha yoga has been proven to help depression long-term. Hatha yoga is performed with physical poses, controlled breathing, followed by a short period of relaxation or meditation. Researcher at Johns Hopkins found that meditation alone is very effective at treating depression as well.

Hurley, K. (2019, April 10). Alternative (drug-free) Treatments for Depression.
