Over his 82 years, Walter has witnessed incredible change — from small-town life in the 1940s and 50s, to major cultural and historical events, modern technology, and global challenges. This Time Capsule celebrates his life, including his long career at Tecumseh Products Company and later as a police transporter, his marriage to Mary Ann, raising three children — John, Christine, and Chad — and his love of family, country music, and storytelling.

Through photos, songs, memories, and advice, we honor Walter’s journey and share his experiences with future generations.

At age 8, Walter’s family moved to Waupun, Wisconsin. This move opened new opportunities, friendships, and experiences while allowing him to carry the values he learned in Ripon — hard work, honesty, and community.

During his childhood and early adolescence, Walter enjoyed playing outside, riding bikes, and exploring Waupun with friends. Music was a central part of his life: he listened to the crooners of the 1940s and 50s at home, and as he got older, he became captivated by the emerging rock ‘n’ roll of Elvis Presley.

School and community events in Waupun helped shape Walter’s character, instilling in him responsibility, social awareness, and the values that guided him into adulthood.

Following his time at Tecumseh, Walter dedicated himself to law enforcement and public safety. His career included:

• Law Enforcement Officer – New Holstein Police Department

• Deputy – Calumet County

• Corrections Officer – Calumet County

• Prisoner Transport Officer – Calumet County

• Member of the Calumet County Tactical Unit during the 1970s

Through these roles, Walter demonstrated integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to community safety. He also mentored younger officers and colleagues, leaving a lasting impact on those who worked with him.

Walter’s dedication to service extended beyond his home. His extensive law enforcement career included roles as a Law Enforcement Officer for New Holstein Police Department, Deputy and Corrections Officer for Calumet County, Prisoner Transport Officer, and member of the Calumet County Tactical Unit during the 1970s. Through these positions, Walter contributed to public safety while earning the trust and respect of his community. Beloved by neighbors, he is known for remembering people by name and even where they live. His approachable nature, dedication, and personal touch have made him a trusted figure in New Holstein and Calumet County.

Music, especially country, remained a lifelong passion. Walter enjoyed listening to Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, George Strait, and other country artists — music that became part of his family’s celebrations and everyday life.

For his grandchildren, Walter serves as a role model of integrity, responsibility, and kindness, qualities reinforced by his long career in law enforcement. He has taught the importance of hard work, honesty, and valuing relationships. His stories, advice, and example provide wisdom that helps navigate everyday life.

Walter’s influence also extends to his spouse, Mary Ann, and his children. His dedication to service, both in his family and his career, has strengthened bonds and inspired them to lead caring, responsible lives. His presence has been a source of guidance and comfort through both challenges and celebrations.

He is the definition of giving the coat off of his back — his empathy, big heart, and selflessness motivate me to be a better person. Watching him live with such care and consideration has taught me that leaning into empathy is not a weakness, but one of the greatest strengths a person can have.
