Haiti was a former European Colony and had suffered from a corrupt/weak government, public health problems, and low agricultural productivity. After suffering close to what was imperialism/colonization, Haiti struggles with being able to accept foreign aid. However, they are in dire need of this help especially regarding agricultural practices. We've learned that Haiti must be more accepting towards international collaboration, and should assess their strengths and weakness to know what to ask for help for and to avoid being exploited.

We can learn from Balaguer's reformation of the Dominican Republic that at times, extreme measures and intervention are required in order to turn a society around. The use of the military to enforce bans on deforestation and other actions taking place in the DR harming the environment was a necessity in order to preserve the limited amount of resources. In order to prevent the further collapse of Haiti, a strong leader who is willing to enforce harsh sanctions that may affect the wealthy's industries is needed.

In addition to Haiti’s unwillingness to accept foreign aid, there is a strong resistance to accepting citizenship from foreign outsiders. Because Creole is one of the two main languages of Haiti, there is a sense of isolation. Compared to their counterpart, the Dominican Republic has opened their citizenship to foreigners who can speak Spanish and other languages. Haiti should open up their borders to foreigners, no matter the language they speak .This wil help with the economy through a new influx of workers and businesses.
