Reconstruction should be remembered as a good and bad thing. Reconstruction had its ups and downs. There were good thing about reconstruction like slavery was abolished. But there were also bad things like black codes. Reconstruction happened in 1863-1877. Reconstruction happened because of the civil war.

Civil War

The civil war lead up to reconstruction. The civil war was a war within the country to free slavery. The south wanted to keep slavery and the north already had free slaves.

Black Codes

Black codes were laws made to mainly target black people. Black Codes restricted black people's right to own property, conduct business, buy and lease land, and move freely through public spaces. And these are just a few of the laws.

Convict Leasing

Convict leasing was a punishment for black codes. It was a way to bring back slavery but not labeling it as slavery. If black people got in trouble they would go into convict leasing, just like slavery they would have to work all day. Plus the people that got “ownership” over them could do whatever they want to the black people.

The Amendments

The amendments were laws made for the country. One Of the amendments was the 13th one. It states “ slavery shall be abolished unless a crime of punishment.” This is good and bad because yes slavery was abolished but if you do a crime (aka black codes) you can be “enslaved” again.

Successes

Some successes in reconstruction abolished slavery, granted citizenship rights, and allowed Black men the right to vote. Slavery might have still been a thing if not for the north winning the civil war, and reconstruction helped rebuild the country.

Failures of Reconstruction

Some bad things about reconstruction was the economy levels after the war. People had to rebuild towns house schools and more. This connects to the future because our economy levels are bad too. Most prices get really high which means people cant afford more items.

The 13th amendment law is still in play. Yes this is good because slavery will forever be abolished but this still means people can get work out of there will for punishments. This is bad because again slavery was abolished but this rule kind of alters that. Meaning slavery can still sort of happen.

Conclusion

Reconstruction was and is a very controversial event. People say it was bad and/or it was good. I think reconstruction should be remembered as both a good and bad thing. There were many bad things but the good things canceled it out and vise versa. Bad thing such as black codes, the kkk and convict leasing. There were also good things such as slavery being abolished and rebuilding social connections within the country. I would say the amendments were in between. So this is why I think reconstruction should be remembered as both good and bad.
