The piece that we put together was called "Beneath the surface" which was based from 4 main stimuli; HIDDEN, ILLUSION, PERFECTION and SECRETS. My role in this was playing a teen who feels isolated from her family and wants to speak her feelings despite no one listening to her. My other role in this process was also being part of designing the set.

In the beginning, we all created our own work with the stimuli we were given and came together and discussed it all. We couldn't have a structure unless we had completed work that could be structured. There was a bit of a conflict with this as not everyone felt included at first when the structure was first being arranged but we later understood that everyone needed material and it needed to be clear and rehearsed in order to be structured.

The way we structured it was to find links between each monologue/song/dance such as themes, words and situations in which each related to each other. In order for this to happen, a few monologues had to be adjusted and like mine and Coral's, a few were combined to create a two-sided monologue.

One rehearsal technique I used was independent research. I had to do this to be able to understand my character and her mannerisms and personality as well as her situation by looking into other peoples experiences of feeling isolated from their families. I also looked into the different words that could be used to convey her feelings to the audience in the monologue.

In order to remember my lines, I would read it over and over and once I felt confident, try to recall it as best as I could. I tried to record myself reading it so I could listen to it as part of this recall process. However, I felt it was less effective than actually reading it over and over and then recalling it.

Whilst rehearsing, I had a tendency to mumble my lines so no one could hear me completely. After I learnt them fully, I started to work on my projection and articulation of my words so that my audience could understand me. When we had a piece to rehearse, I chose a spot on the wall behind where my audience were going to be placed to try and project my voice so that they could hear me clearly, but enough so It didnt seem like I was shouting at them.

I also decided to try and think of small gestures to do whilst saying my lines so I wasnt standing still the whole time just saying them. This could also show my audience how im feeling when Im speaking and could create a bigger impact on the way they portray my character

At the final stages of rehearsal, we felt that we could use a brechtian style of staging where we were all standing at the sides. It seemed more exposed and that we had nothing to hide from the audience. However, this proved difficult as standing still for almost 40 minutes took its toll on most of us, despite it being a better form of staging than going backstage between sections..
