         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Shakers religion was based off of celibacy, communal living, and the confession of sin. They wanted to live a perfect Christian life and attempted to maintain spiritual and temporal simplicity, as well as pacifism and perfectionism in all aspects of their lives. They were also known for the equality of men and women. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Born: February 29, 1776<br>Age 22- joined the Shakers.<br>1762- Married&nbsp;<br>1770- arrested during a period of religious persecution. Created idea of celibacy while in jail.<br>1774- persuaded husband, brother and six other followers to immigrate to America.<br>Shaker movement began to spread throughout New England.<br>Thought of as the embodiment of the female half of God's dual nature.<br>1780- arrested for treason and refusal to sign oath of allegiance.<br>1782-83- toured New England: Witness claim she performed miracles, including healing the sick by touch.<br>Died:&nbsp;September 8, 1774<br><br></div>]]></description>
