I wanted to look up the solid definitions of both power and control and see how they related and how they differed. My immediate thought was that this was another circumstance where individuals might commonly misuse the terms and incorrectly interchange them. I think that like myself, it may depend on the context of the words to fully understand their intended meaning.

I think that someone who is powerful could also be controlling however, someone who is controlling may not always have power...

Tyrant

While thinking about the difference between power and control the word tyrant kept coming to mind. Tyranny is the cruel and oppressive rule of an individual or government body and I believe it is helpful in discovering and understanding the line between power and control (of course on a more extreme level). Tyranny is powerful injustice and terror... this is why I believe my previous statement "I think that someone who is powerful could also be controlling however, someone who is controlling may not always have power," is accurate. Tyranny is powerful but it is powerful control. Being powerful means you have the ability to influence, being controlling means you have the power to influence or direct.

Our discussion on Toyota's recalls lead me to making the connection between a companies control and their crisis management. I thought of this recent fiasco by United Airlines and how they completely lost control of the situation and even prior had set themselves up to fail by overbooking and not managing bookings and passengers. The best thing they did, unlike Toyota, was immediately issue an apology for their employee and security conduct. It will be interesting to see how they improve their image and how this effects their business.
