The mood is low, there’s a storm, the room is messy, and Martin is hoarse from giving his speech. Martin decides to order room service for himself and the woman who delivers is a beautiful woman by the name of Camae. Martin invites Camae in, Camae is confident and sure of herself, she gives Martin his coffee on the house but she says that she should get a tip for bringing his room service to him in the rain. Camae and Martin continue to converse, almost in a flirty manner, talking about his sermon he gave tonight. Camae wishes she could’ve seen Martin giving his speech, speaking about him in a way that puts him on a pedestal but Martin wishes more people would have shown up despite the rain.

After returning from a speech the night before his assassination, Martin Luther King Jr. begins to head over to his motel room after a tiring day. Soon after arriving, he had sent his friend Abernathy to buy him a pack of smokes and proceeded to attempt to get room service whilst he waited on the Pall Malls. After a bit of back and forth between MLK and the phone operator, he begins to settle down, and only a few minutes later, he hears a knock on his door. To his surprise, he finds a beautiful lady standing outside in the pouring rain named Camae, holding a tray with coffee in one hand and a newspaper to keep herself dry in the other. King invites her in, helping her stay out of the rain, and the two begin to talk. They begin to converse about the recent speech MLK had given the night before. While King expressed how he would have liked it to be slightly different, such as people listening closer to him, and wished more had shown up and attended the speech, Camae comforted King, stating that he would not have been able to get too many to stand out in the rain to see it, and how she wishes she had been there to watch it.

You have a girl named Peggy practicing lines for a play which is being overseen by Mrs. Mortar. You then have girls in the backgorund sewing while occasionally interupting with conversation. All the while there is a girl in the corner practing Latin instead of sewing, with a girl constantly bashing her annunciation. The act is shortly cutoff after asking Mrs. Mortar why she did not pursue cinema which she deflects and instead ask the girl why she is practicing Latin instead of sewing.

While Peggy attempts to read from what sounds like The Merchant of Venice several of the girls are sewing. However, a few of them are not doing what they're supposed to be doing. One is cutting another's hair and oddly enough Mrs. Mortar cares more about the state of the scissors rather than Rosalies hair. Lois and another child are practicing for a latin exam which is in the afternoon. Mrs. Mortar dodges a question about her acting career and manages to get the girls back on task.

Before Brick talks about Big Daddy’s illness, the play shows a tense and uneasy bedroom scene. Brick sits quietly with his drink, distant and cold, while Maggie moves around him, talking with urgency and frustration. It feels like a fight between her determination to save their marriage and his refusal to respond. This clash makes the tension clear and prepares the audience for the bigger family problems that will come later. The scene sets up the emotional distance between them that becomes central to the rest of the play. - Addison Higginson
