The forces were formed, and bound, as coalitions which were spurred on by the financial interests of Britain and the pride of the Germanic States. Napoleon was exiled but returned, and was finally defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Many German states, including Prussia and Austria were defeated by Napoleon before the end of the war. The Napoleonic Wars brought about the ultimate end of the Holy Roman Empire and Napoleon's reforms ensured that Old Germany would never rise again. The defeats also fostered an everlasting hate between the Germans and French.
