Well the reason why the family did not have sugar or butter is because they was in the middle of WW2. So they just could not use any butter. They could not put butter on pancakes to make on breakfast mornings for the girls. What caused them to not have butter and sugar is that they was in the middle in the war and it was the beginning of WW2. It was because the people in the war did not want then to us butter and sugar
