2.1 Look(ing) into the future: Activity 1 - Option 1 by EUN Partnership aisbl

Ask your students to imagine their dream job. How do they imagine themselves as successful professionals? Would they work at all? Please tell them that they can be very innovative in their vision: maybe they wish to work 3 hours per day, or a few days a year. Ask them to think about work in different terms that nowadays. You can split your students in groups or have it as an individual activity.

Share the feedback in the Padlet below. If the activity is individual, share the feedback from one of your students. If you split your class in groups, share the feedback from each group. As a third option, you can just share how the activity went and your impressions from it in a short summary.

The most common answer is to become a famous Chef ( I work in a vocational school for catering and hotellerie fields). The most interesting answer came from a boy who told he wants to cook for old and lonely people because he already does this for his grand father. He imagines himself in a big kitchen of a nice building surrounded by nature and a big pool. The guests decides the daily menu and help him cooking it. He said that when people get old they look like children and so he can cook funny and colored cakes!

I asked them and their wishes are connected to sportsmen, policemen , firemen- the boys; doctors, teachers- the girls. Some of them would like to have their parents jobs. One of the studetns told me he did not want to have a job. I asked him why. He answered he would like to be a truck driver , to drive all over the world. In his oppinion this would not be a job as long as it is for pleasure and you like it. So my students taught me a lesson to teach to the others: it is important to choose a job you like and you consider useful for you and for the community.

No money, no dreams?
I teach math and science at a primary school, to a third class (8 years old). My school is located within a risk area of Palermo (Sicily). Most of them is hothead and very poor.

Today I asked them to close their eyes for 5 minutes and to be carried away by the music in the future to see themselves as successful workers. In particular, I asked him to try to picture the place and the details of their lives. After 5 minutes they had to open their eyes and begin to write their dreams and their emotions. The experiment worked. The children were concentrated but the jobs of their dreams are surprisingly homogeneous. Most of my students want to be a professional football player (7/13), one of them the actor, two the hair dressers, two the singers. And one of them wrote of wanting to be a mobster too.
So, I want to share with you my considerations.

Unfortunately, behind the socio-economic poverty, often there is also a poverty of dreams. I think that these children need to be educated to dream and broaden their horizons. Sometimes teaching is really very hard, but perhaps that's where the real teacher's mission is.

I teach English at 11-14 year-old students. This morning I suggested my students to review how to express intentions and desires about the future. I asked them to concentrate on their dream job for this activity. They all expressed sentences like "I'm going to be..." or "I'd like to be...". Some of their dream jobs were really creative like musicians, artists, composers, dancers. However, what impressed me was that the majority of them think that their dream can't come true because of the difficult financial situation we're experiencing in Italy and , at some extent, in Europe. So, I tried to comfort an encourage them in believing it's really possible. I asked them to think "How can my dream job come true?", "What should I do?", "Which steps should I take to make it real?"
I'll know their answers next week.

Today I asked to my students (14-15 years old) to tell me what kind of business would create if they had no constraints. After a while of bewilderment the students have begun to focus on some ideas. The boys thought to activities related to sports: gyms, football fields; the girls in fashion or beauty business. I asked them "Where's the news"? They began to add something to the original ideas by introducing ICT with service activities supported by app. I asked them if they thought they were prepared to be able to realize this dream. The most frequent answer was NO

In this period of economical crisis, it seems that you should try to follow a career more oriented to the job they can find than to what they really like. And some are discouraged and think that they will study a lot and will spend their future life doing an under-skilled job. Our school tries to orient them in their choice but for some of them is not easy at all. We discussed a lot in the past and also in the last days. For sure the ones who think to follow a STEM career are more optimistic than the ones who would prefer to follow with Humanities (we are a classical lyceum, so Humanities are the main subjects)

I teach at a technical school and many students did not choose this school for a real inclination, but because motivated by other reasons. Very often the parents decided for them.
The result is that some engage in the study and they have very clear what they will do after school, others (many) are very uncertain or rather imagine careers far away from studies. This second aspect is not all bad, but they could spend this year in achieving their goals. I push my students to follow their dreams and take stock of everything that they learn at school, so they can spend their skills in other areas, different from the course of study

Carina - SwedenWhen I did this in a group with 15 year olds, they had very poor imagination about the future. I mean they were held back by the box and they had difficult times to think creatively. Then I did this with a group of 11 year olds. Their thoughts were more innovative and playful and they started to build a town in the future because it was easier for them to think the society first and then they thought about what jobs might be needed here. After that they thought about what schools and education must be like, to meet this society, this town. Then they wanted us to find future-scientists because they want to show their results to them. So that is where we are now, we seek future-scientists.

The main thing most of the group (15 students) pointed out was that they would like to continue on upper secondary level and go to university. They said they cannot tell anything before they´ve got a chance to study. So, it means that our educational system more or less kills the fantasies or at least they don´t want to speak before they have achieved something. I don´t know whether it`s bad or not but I see the need for encouraging students to feel free and just imagine!
