Imperialism is the process of taking over other countries. One of the motives is humanitarian, the white mans burden. They thought it was their job to help others and at the time it wasn't considered racist. The next motive is economic, they wanted to profit off of other countries resources. An example is when the discovery of diamonds in the Orange Free State, and gold in the Transvaal increased economic competition between countries. Strategic was also another motive, for instance when Egypt when into debt. Great Britain was able to take control of the Suez Canal. Political power, made countries want to control more land in order to be a superior/respected nation. Additionally, missionaries wanted to convert people to their religion. For instance, they wanted to spread Christianity to other parts of the world.

Imperialism is the creation of am overseas empire. The motives for this was humanitarian, economics, strategic, power, and missionary's. Humanitarian was a motive because of the white mans burden. The Europeans thought that the native people were primative. Economics was where they take control of the economy, like when Europe took over Africa and controlled every aspect of the continent. Strategic was a big part of the motives. An example is like how the British took control of the Suez Canal and the entire coast of the Red Sea. Power like how the Europeans took control of a huge area in Africa and Asia and ruled them with an iron fist. Missionary's was a big part of imperialism because they went out and tried to convert people to Christianity. They also reported back to the Europeans that the native people needed help even though they didn't.

Imperialism in the late 1800's is the act of spreading your empire over seas. Many European countries imperialized Africa, Asia, and Latin America. There were several motives for imperialism. One motive of imperialism is humanitarianism, and example of this is the White Mans Burden. This is a poem written about the "burden" white men take on by "civilizing Africans. They believed they were helping the Africans and doing something good for them, even though to today's standards this would be considered racist. Another motive is economic reasons. Countries would take resources from African countries and tell them for higher prices else where. The third motive is strategic reasons. European countries looked at Africa as something they could use to benefit their own country. A prime example is Great Briton taking control of the Suez Canal. Briton needed a faster way to get to India instead of traveling around Africa. By taking the Suez Canal they also took control of the entire Nile river. Political power is also a factor, an example of this was Belgium taking a huge part of Africa; Congo, and establishing their power over them, taking their resources and making them a dominant factor in the middle of Africa. The final reason is Missionaries wanted to travel around the world and spread Christianity.

Imperialism is a country taking control of another nation to benefit the country that conquered the other country and expand their empire. One of the motives was the fact that the country conquering the other country thought it was doing good because of the white mans burden. Economic motive example would be when British would take raw materials such as cotton and taking it back to their land, manufacturing and then selling it back to India. One example of strategical location was British taking control of Africa to gain control of the Nile river. Countries that supported imperialism believed that taking over countries would give them political power and one example is when British used Indian soldiers to fight.Western nations wanted to christianize nations that were already Christian and this was an example of Missionaries.

Imperialism is the creation of over seas empires. A stronger country wants to expand their power and strength to increase their superiority. The motives of imperialism include humanitarian, economic, strategic, political and missionaries. Humanitarian is the want to help other people in need. An example of this is "The White Mans Burden" by Rudyard Kipling which addressed that Europeans just wanted to help other countries in need out of the goodness in their hearts. The poem had good intentions but as time evolved it is now perceived as racist. Economic was another motive of imperialism. The European countries wanted to elevate their economies and they saw the opportunity to use the natural resources and labor available in Africa. The Europeans used strategies to take land that would benefit them either economically or geographically. Power was the other countries wanting to expand and control more land. An example of this power is the Europeans colonizing Africa. Lastly were Christian missionaries that tried to spread western ideas to the world. An example is the Jesuits who traveled the world to spread Christianity along with teaching, building schools and medical help.
