Sputnik was a USSR satellite and was officially the first thing to enter the Earth's orbit. Kicked off the Space Race, as Americans were afraid they'd lose the exploration of Space to the USSR.

The first country to actually reach space, in a technical sense, was the USSR. With Sputnik's existence kickstarting the Space Race, the US had to come back strong from already losing a part of space to the USSR. This created further competition because the US would have had to make up for lost time, increasing the amount of time and effort spent into the Space Race... and eventually increasing tension.

President Kennedy’s promise to get a man on the moon was an important part of the space race because it both would have began to speed up production on the Space Race and attempt to revitalize Americans’ faith in their own country through being the first ones on the moon. Project Apollo was created as a direct effect of Kennedy’s proclamation.

The winner of the space race is also America: being the first ones on the moon essentially "won" them the race. Especially because they did it in a significantly short amount of time.

Three ways that the Space Race has helped impact our understanding of space and science overall are, put very simply,
- We have more understanding of space and what goes into getting there (such as formulas that can be tested in space-like areas)
- We have opened and seized the possibility of further space exploration
- Our technology has advanced rapidly in the way of space exploration and others
- .. Plus we also know what's on the moon now and understand how the moon phases work

The Space Race created, or at least helped the spread of, a number of conflicts.

One was that it would display who had the better science and technology development. It was pivotal to actually look like you had everything together in order for people to listen to you.

It also generated new land to conquer and for more information to be gained. Not in the traditional sense of conquer, but for an idea to be conquered: the idea that space was a thing people could search and explore and eventually colonize.

Maybe my weakest point, but it was also just something that would generate morale. Space has been so vast for so long, so seeing people finally try to conquer it in a competition would likely generate a lot of respect and morale for the winning "team".
