RSV is a common respiratory virus that often presents as mild, cold-like symptoms, but can be fatal in some infants and older adults, if not treated immediately. It is caused by an infection from the human orthopneumovirus. Usually, infection occurs because an infected person coughs or sneezes, and those infected droplets get onto someone else and are transported to their eyes, mouth, or nose. Touching a surface that has the virus on it and not using proper handwashing techniques after can also lead to transmission of the virus.
