This was the first film that was made in Aice Media class. I worked in a group with 5 other people, and we created a murder mystery film called "The Super Murder". There was a group of 5 friends, but inside that group was one enemy that wanted to kill them. This role was played by Johnny, and he attempted to kill the other 4 friends and that's when I came in. I saw what happened and went after Johnny, he was then knocked out long enough for me to revive the others. That's when suddenly Johnny ran over and tried to kill me, but was quickly stopped when one of the friends (Dylan) came in and killed Johnny for good.

Some feedback we had was that the sound quality wasn't the best and could definitely be improved. Another big factor is that the storyline wasn't exactly clear, and there was confusion in between characters. Too many of the clips were shot full body and behind the back, so next time it would be better to have more up close shots. Also, sometimes the acting would be a little off, and someone would laugh or shake the camera. Some positives noted were that the transition went along with the film very well. The music also added to it and made it more realistic. The tracking when filming was also a plus when the camera person would keep up with the actors movements.

Film Remake and Reflection

My group was assigned another group's film to rewrite and improve the script. We had to include 10 different shots to show our understanding of them, and how to improve a film. In the original plot, a student applied to Harvard and for him to get in he came up with a cure for blindness. In the remake, we had two students apply and work together on the cure, but then one student stole all the credit and the other student didn't get accepted. Later on The student was caught and got all rights of the cure taken away. In this film I played the role of producer and editor. It was not different from the last film, as I played the same roles, I just acted more.

For the feedback we received, it went over pretty well. There were some great additions with effects and sound. The filming was much smoother, and the plot was more clear and easier to follow. As for what we need to work on, some of the production wasn't great. The filming was a little shaky, and the camera would move when it wasn't supposed to. For some different shots, we used lots of panning and tracking to add to the story. We also added some zoom ins which made the film seem more intense. In the scene where the 2 students walked up to the blind person many shots were incorporated, such as long shot, panning, and tilting up and down. This added a feeling of being involved in the conversation.

Genre and Representation Reflection

In class we studied genres. We looked at Shakespeare/Western, Biopics/Sports, Sci-fi/YA, Musicals/Romance, Comedy/Drama, History/War, Superhero's/Documentaries, Family/Animation, Crime/Mystery, and Adventure/Fantasy. We studied conventions, explaining iconography and representations of every genre, and codes, looking at the different shots and angles used. We also reviewed audience expectations and how the audience is supposed to react and what emotions they will feel. For each genre, we watched three clips that represented the genre and showed the iconography and codes that were previously talked about. This way, you could experience what the genre is like first hand. We also discussed hybrid genres, such as horror and thriller, and explained how they often work together to achieve a certain view of a movie.

The genres of my groups previous films are horror/thriller, and mystery. In our first film, there was a killer that went around killing people and had magic powers. The audience could see the horror by the killer, but felt the thrill and suspense of wanting to know what would happen next. You could see the different angles and shots that went with it like lots of panning and zoom ins. In the second film it represented the mystery genre. Two students worked to find a cure for blindness and get accepted into Harvard. In the end, one student steals the solution and the audience has to figure out why that student did that. The shots dig into the emotion of the other student that was stolen from after she found out she did not get credit for her work. There was lots of low key lighting in the lab while the students were creating the solution, this portrayed a feeling of suspense and wonder of what is happening.

My favorite genre is horror, and I think for the final project there should be a group that films a kidnapping. There is a teenage boy that really wants a girlfriends, but no one wants to date him because he is kind of nerdy and a loner, so he kidnap's the most popular girl in school and makes her date him. There will be lots of low key lighting while the teenager steals his girlfriend, fast moving camera work, lots of two shots and POV shots. Audience can expect to be nervous as they wait to see what happened to the girl.

Editing and Sound - Midterm Film

In November and December the class learned about editing, sound, and screenwriting/screenplay format. We studied film editing concepts and created documents featuring 20 plus kinds of editing techniques. We watched a documentary on film editing "The Cutting Edge" and a video on use of color. Every student participated as we read the screenplay for "The Incredibles" and learned how to format screenplays with special software. This helped when we each had to write a two minute horror film opening about someone having a nightmare for our midterm film project.

For the midterm film we had to write and film a one-two minute opening. They included minimal dialogue, with mainly music/sound effects. We could not have wall-to-wall music or long takes. The film had to start in black with a title/company logo, optional credits before a straight cut or dissolve to the first image. There had to be three cross cuts going back and forth of the actor and the nightmare. It also had to include one close up, dutch angle, high or low angle, low key light set up or silhouette, pan or tilt or track/push or spinaround, zoom or dolly zoom, a subliminal cut or multitake or smash cut, match cut, J cut or L cut, use of slow or fast motion. It also needed one intentional use of color for story/emotion, an instance of intentional use of costume/hair/makeup, instance of visual complexity in setting choice, three sound effects, one piece of incidental music or sound motif repeated three times. For extra credit we could include: quick cuts, montage, wide establishing shot, split screen, POV shot, reflection shot, intentional break of the fourth wall, intentional break of the rule of thirds, rack focus or pull focus shot, intentional use of handheld camera work, use of color filters to create a dream like quality, fisheye lens or fisheye effect, or a company logo with high quality graphic.

In my film I adhered to horror conventions/codes/audience/expectations and engagement by including low key lighting and dark colors. I had to film outside when it was dark to achieve the look of being scared. When watching a horror film, the audience expects to see something scary, and by having a clown wearing "scary" makeup you get something that can be seen as a horror film. By having fast clips and building suspense you keep the audience entertained and engaged. I broke the horror codes because there was only one jump scare and it wasn't out of no where. You can expect it to happen based off the clips leading up to it. I represented a young girl getting scared in the dark by something bigger and scary. By having her drift into a dream where she then gets taken by the clown, it achieves everything I'm trying to say.

Successful parts of my film was the acting. The actors took the film very seriously to get the clips we needed in order to finish the project. Something less successful was the shots/angles, there definitely could have been more angles and different shots to make the film appear more intense and not so choppy. While writing my script I learned that less is more. You don't need to add a whole bunch of details in the script, that can be added while filming and a lot of it even comes while editing. Once the script is all done it is much easier to shoot, you have a plan and know how to get it done as efficiently as possible. I understood how people have to go around and find perfect places to film, as I had to drive around for 30 minutes looking for the best street, ditch, lighting in my neighborhood. While editing I realized it can be much more simple than it has to be. It doesn't need to take hours and hours, just find another way to get it done. My learning curve during this project was trying to make sure everything went perfectly, but I learned there are set backs and its everything is not perfect on the first try.

Two Minute Film Opening Analysis`

1. In the first two minutes of Life Stinks, a rich man(Mr. Bolt) drives by and splashes homeless people on the side of the road not caring about how this is going to affect them. He only seems to care for himself and is looking to purchase a big part of LA where lots of homeless people live.

2. The genre for the film is comedy and the target audience is for males 13+

3. The opening credits are very simple and white. They appear as the first clips come through. There is no logo, just a big white title with a bold font saying "LIFE STINKS" It takes up the majority of the screen.

4. When Mr. Bolt is driving by the homeless, you can see the puddle on the ground, the people sitting next to it, and the car wheeling around the corner headed right for the puddle. You can see how the car doesn't care that they just splashed multiple people and just kept driving. The car arrives to a building and the camera only shows multiple man's feet walking through a building for the next minute and a half. This shows the audience that this man is powerful.

5. There isn't really a lot of sound in the opening clips of this movie. It is very plain with just the sound of water splashing and a few people getting mad. Then a man gets out of the car with multiple men following behind him. You can hear shoes hitting the ground and various voices saying "morning".

6. After the first 2 minutes I wanted to keep watching because I wanted to know where the foot steps were going and why at the beginning it showed the homeless getting splashed. I have many questions on how this relates to the rest of the story, and why Mr. Bolt is so powerful.

7. I liked the editing style of the first 2 minutes because there were just feet walking for half of it, and it made it seem like one continuous clip even though it was multiple shots.

8. The first 2 minutes adheres to conventions by displaying a problem between homeless, and rich people. It creates controversy which people like to see.

9. This breaks conventions because it doesn't show a lot in the first 2 minutes, it just shows multiple men walking and not where they are going.

10. This represents social groups and issues because it's two different kind of people against each other. You have like the lowest people and then a very rich man.

11. I think this film was originally distributed the way it was because it shows the difference between someone with a very very low status and then the complete opposite with an extremely rich man.

Preproduction Requirements-Director

For our film, I would like it to look very bright outside to appear funny/happy. The music should be upbeat so the audience is immediately aware of the genre. The impact this movie should have is making people aware of the dangers some homeless people can cause but also show that you're not in danger every time you encounter a homeless person. I want the audience to really have a good laugh about this film without promoting that homelessness is a joke, but as a movie can be funny. I don't have a specific reference to look at, I'm just going to use my imagination to help with the setting and acting. For the setting, it needs to take place on a beach where two different typed of people have an interaction, and the actor need to fit into character. Te homeless actor needs to dress in ragged clothes, maybe with holes, and be very dirty. For the preppy kid, I think he should wear a polo with a backwards hat, khakis, and fancy sunglasses. It should appear to the audience that these two people are very different. For specific shots, I would like to have a spin around while the preppy kid is getting attacked with the fish that way you can see the whole fight and understand both characters movement. There needs to be a tracking, zoom in, pan, zoom out, and maybe an establishing shot. At the beginning I think it would look really nice if the title and credits were rolling as the homeless guy is walking along the beach in the background while the camera is tracking him.

Once we are done filming and begin editing, I think everyone in the group needs to work together and give input on what the transitions/technique we want to use. We want to adhere to conventions by making jokes and have a fight scene but have it be funny instead of brutal, the goal is just to make the audience laugh. We will break conventions by having some parts that aren't funny like the whole aspect of a homeless man stealing food because he's hungry. This could have a really deep meaning and the audience might see that instead of the comedic parts, but hopefully they fit together perfectly. I want to work with the actors as a leader in case they have any questions on where they're supposed to stand, or what to say. I need to be there so they can ask me questions and get the exact answer they are looking for. Also if anyone in the group or cast has any suggestions, to highly take them into consideration instead of just dismissing them.

Independent Distribution and Marketing Plan -- Mr. and Miss Guided

1. Since our film is being distributed independently I would want it to be shown in theatres. Since it is a small film I would need to hire a film distributor because I would not be able to get the movie as far in the industry as a distributor would. They would need to get to movie to go to a film festival where comedies are received and looked for.

2. The title of the film is Mr. and Miss Guided. I do not think this title exactly fits the film because it is supposed to be about a homeless man and it's a comedy. The title doesn't intrigue me at all and for a comedy the title should want to grab the audience's attention. We had another title and then it was switched to this one, I personally think we should change it back.

3. "Things are about to get fishy." This should grab the audiences attention especially with the word fishy since a lot of males like to fish, this could intrigue them.

4. The target audience for comedy is males 18+. Most people will have a decent income and a well rounded education. They like to laugh a lot and probably make jokes about things all the time.

5. To reach the target audience, we would need to advertise on social media platforms that the audience uses, and popular places they go. Since the audience is 18+ we can use social media platforms like Instagram or Tik Tok to advertise.

6. To engage the target audience online, we need to provide small clips that will really grab their attention to make them want to watch our film. In order for them to click on the ad, it has to appeal to things they like, so we would need an intriguing cover for that.

7. From their films artwork, the title and the cover match very well so you can immediately notice the genre and what the film will be about. The cover should be bright so that the film appears to be a comedy and people will willingly want to watch it and be excited without the worries of being scared.

During the production process of our film, we learned that it can be very difficult to capture all the sound you want without a microphone. The filming was shaky because the cinematographer had to run behind our actor so it is hard to follow along. The clips did not turn out as we hoped and it was very windy. Feedback we received is that we should reshoot because it is hard to understand what we are trying to accomplish with this film. The transitions need to be smoother and we need to have more time at the beginning of the clip and the ending so that our group editor can have better luck with the new clips. My group will be re filming soon to hope and achieve what we were originally going for. We also realized that we need to add some dialogue since our last try there was hardly any speaking, so it was hard to follow. Even when the actor was talking it was difficult to hear because of the wind. This time around we know what to change and what to keep to finish this film.
