He was 19 when the Nazis took over his homeland, Poland. He was a boy scout that fully believed in being prepared. He made a run for the Hungarian border by was caught by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz.

Escape Story

He worked in a warehouse that stored soldier uniforms and his freind was a trusted mechanic in Auschwitz. Since Piechowski could read German he saw that his friend was to be killed. They wanted to escape badly so they made a plan. They added 2 more men to their plan. The 4 men acted like they were on garbage patrol which allowed them to go to the garage. The garbage can was full of uniforms and guns. Then they snuck into the garage and stole the commander's car; the fastest in the camp. They drove up to the gate and screamed to the gatekeeper to open up to the would shoot him. The gate was opened and they escaped Auschwitz.

This daring escape inspired others to try on their own. There were more security measures taken at Auschwitz from then on. Prisoners at Auschwitz were tattooed with their prison number for easy identification.
