Reseda man arrested after girlfriend is found dead in shipping container they called their home

Jan 30, 2018 - Daily News
Like other articles I have read, it seems like this perpetrator had mental illness, as he was heard muttering about the incident. Him and his partner, the woman her killed, had lived in a shipping container for 3 years. As a society, we look at homeless people and expect them to have mental illness, but then do not provide enough services to help them, something I believe is a huge problem. Although there had been no past abuse reported, there many have been signs, signs that people missed. Although we don't know what caused this man to kill his partner, IPV can be caused by many things: mental illness, jealousy, control issues, and alcohol/drug abuse, to only name a few (Barnett, Miller-Perrin, & Perrin, 2011, p.450-452). I would be interested in learning more about the perpetrator and I would also like to advocate for better mental health services for those who are homeless.

Barnett, O. W., Miller-Perrin, C.
Should we be treating domestic violence as a medical problem?

Jan 31, 2018 - Daily News
I really enjoyed this read because it it showed me that as a society, we are becoming more proactive regarding IPV. This article states that there is a push for doctors, nurses, emergency room staff, and other healthcare professionals to ask questions regarding IPV. In the past, many doctors would notice things that seemed off, but not ask about them, sending the abused back into the arms of the abuser. We saw this happen often to Beth in I Am Not Your Victim. She was seen by many medical professionals, most of whom never asked the right questions (Sipe & Hall, 2014). I believe education is really important here. Showing medical professionals the right questions to ask and training them on how to ask them. Many people just don't know the signs, how to handle a situation like IPV, or the correct steps to take. Something that education could really help with.

Sipe, B., & Hall, E. J.
The signs of abuse and neglect to look for

Jan 16, 2018 - abc7 Los Angeles
This article shows me that people and society are becoming more aware of abuse and neglect. People are trying to educate the masses on how to spot family violence and to be more aware of their surroundings. I really enjoyed this article because it lists the signs of abuse and neglect to people to look out for, signs that many people may miss: missing school, body odor, having trouble walking/ sitting, quick attachments. etc. Many people may not realize that these are signs of abuse, so this article could really save someones life. In 2005-2006 there were over 1 million recorded cases of child maltreatment, and if this list is able to help one, it has really done a great thing (Barnett, Miller-Perrin, & Perrin, 2011, p. 146). I believe that education like this is something I could do, I could help educate those I am around through word of mouth, articles, and other sources - education is truly the start of any great intervention.

Barnett, O.

Jan 26, 2018 - abc7 Los Angeles

The man in this article shows that the abuser, has little to no understanding of what society sees as acceptable. Not only did he slash his wives throat in an attempt to kill her, he also isolated and manipulated a young student into having a sexual relationship with him. Although this made me upset, I have come to realize that things of this nature happen often. MFIPV can rage from minor abuse, to severe abuse using a weapon; as seen in this article (Barnett, Miller-Perrin, & Perrin, 2011, p 421). Although I know it would be hard for me, I would be interested in trying to figure out a treatment for the abuser. Although it did not state in the article, I wonder if he has any mental illnesses or issues he may be having and go from there.

Barnett, O. W., Miller-Perrin, C. L., & Perrin, R. D.

Jan 26, 2018 - Press Enterprise
Although I am not sure how accurate, this article states this mother had a mental illness and tried to get treatment, only to be turned away. As a society, we should not be turning those who need treatment away, and I believe if this woman had gotten the treatment she was seeking, this little girl may still be alive today. The aunt stated, "I wish I could say how hard it is to get someone with mental illness past the door of a mental health facility." That is something that really got to me while reading this article. What did the system do wrong, how/ why did the system fail her and her daughter? 69.9% of all child fatalities are caused by a parent (Barnett, Miller-Perrin, & Perrin, 2011, p.147). Why is this statistic so high? As a social worker, I would want to help prevent this and use education and other tools to do so.

Barnett, O. W., Miller-Perrin, C. L., & Perrin, R. D.

Jan 24, 2018 - Daily News
This is an article that I had also read about and followed the story for quite some time. This article shows how some people in authoritative positions in our society have been protected in the past. Many of the women that Nassar sexually abused saw him as a father figure. He used that power and trust to pray on women of all ages. He was a household name in many athletes lives; yet when victims shared their stories, he was protected until very recently. I am so happy to read that he was going to get such a long sentence, and believe he completely deserves it. Sexual assault has lasting affects on its victims As we read the letter by Grant Watkins (2010), we see how much hurt is done when someone is sexually abused. I believe that I would advocate that more women speak up against this man, as I am sure he abused many others. Watkins was able to tell his abuser how he felt, which helped him heal (Watkins, 2010). I believe that is a great step, and one that I would urge others to do.
Watkins, G. (2010). Unpinned: breaking the hold of sexual assault and abuse.

Jan 19, 2018 - latimes.com
This article was one that made me so angry to read. When I first heard about it I truly couldn't believe it. 13 children, 2-29, each looking almost half their age due to malnutrition and abuse, were held in a home for years. Shackled, watching the dogs get fed and not them, being allowed to only shower once a year. This should never acceptable in any society and I am so happy that their brave young daughter was courageous enough to escape and call for help. Due to this abuse the children experiences physical, emotional, and behavioral impairments, and I believe that these will exist for the children's entire lives. Our readings state that these negative effects can me long lasting and that this type of abuse can cause PTSD, mania, anger/ hostility, continual health issues, and many others (Barnett, Miller-Perrin, & Perrin, 2011, p. 154-155). I am not sure to what extent I would be able to intervene with this case. It seems like it would be emotionally taxing and require lots of knowlege regarding this sensitive subject, and I am not sure I am experienced enough to handle something of this magnitude yet.

Barnett, O.

Jan 11, 2018 - Daily News
This article is one that was a great read; a positive read in a slew of pretty negative and heart-wrenching articles. It shows that as a society, we are trying to do something to help those affected by family violence. It shows that even before the #Metoo movement, there were people in and around Los Angeles wanting to make a safe space for victims. This article showed me that we are headed in the right direction. This center will provide medical, mental-health, legal and social-service components that all come together for victims, something that I have leaned is vital in all of the readings done throughout this course. As we have read throughout this course, many people do not leave their abusers out of fear (Barnett, Miller-Perrin, & Perrin, 2011, p. 369). This center hopes to be a place where they can help the victim feel safe and supported. I believe this would be a great place for social workers to be working. With the skills sets I have leaned in this family violence course, and others like it, I believe I would have many of the skills to help those who came into the center.

Barnett, O.

Feb 28, 2018 - latimes.com
This was a really interesting read for me. The mother caused the death of the daughter, so her biological father, a father who was never in the daughters life, fought for her remains. Although he had never paid child support and was never there for the child, the judge gave the father custody of her body and stated that he must give her a proper funeral. The family is muslim, a fact that the judge took into consideration. The father wanted to cremate the daughter for religious reasons, but if he did not get custody, she would be buried.
Through my reading, I learned that there was about 211 cases of Filicide in 2010 (Barnett, Miller-Perrin, & Perrin, 2011, p 264). The number is high, yet I do not believe it is even being reported accurately. I would want to do some research as to why this is happening, and ways to prevent family murders.

Barnett, O.

Feb 13, 2018 - abc7 Los Angeles
Although it is still unknown if this was a murder, it is being treated as so. This article broke my heart. The babies mother left him in the care of her boyfriend, and in the short time she was gone, the baby became unresponsive at the hands of this man. He was known to be a drug user, something that does lead to abuse, and did not seem to have experience with children. A deficit in parenting skills and a lack of education can lead people to get frustrated at young children (Barnett, Miller-Perrin, & Perrin, 2011, p. 181). Something that may have happened in this case. As I have mentioned before, I would urge education. Letting parents know to be careful of who they leave their children with, coping mechanisms, and just proper parenting techniques.

Barnett, O. W., Miller-Perrin, C. L., & Perrin, R. D.

Feb 13, 2018 - CBS Los Angeles
I enjoyed this read because I believe their is an issue with IPV regarding those in the NFL and other big league sports. I was happy to read that the school decided to take a stand against domestic violence and suspend this player from all activities. I believe that I would want to learn more about the situation, and then would be able to know how to move forward with the situation. There is a lot that can cause dating violence, many of which come from patriarchal beliefs and attitudes, which may have come into play in this instance (Barnett, Miller-Perrin, & Perrin, 2011, p. 310).

Barnett, O.
She’s creating her own therapy, helping herself by helping others

Feb 4, 2018 - Daily Breeze
This article was one that showed me how resilient people can be, but also how out society needs to do a better job of helping immigrants and those who may not be documented, especially in todays climate. This student had a history of sexual assault but has been unable to afford services to help her cope. She instead meets with others like her and vents, being her own therapist. I believe therapy services should be more accessible for those in this position. 59% of victims of sexual abuse have repressed memories about their abuse, and these can be worked out, but therapy needs to be an option (Barnett, Miller-Perrin, & Perrin, 2011, p 205). This victim is a student, and believe that her school should offer services related to therapy, mental health, etc. I would find out what those services are and urge the student to go and talk with a professional - as school mental health is usually included in tuition costs.

Barnett, O.
