I have been increasingly mindful of the need to try to instil a sense of hope and optimism in the person who is experiencing mental illness. To have hope is to have vision of a future....

Having not completed the Recovery Oriented Mental Health Practice subject and working outside of nursing, my experiences of hope may be different to others. While I work with people who experience mental health issues, my work encompasses young people who have been involved in criminal activity, many of whom have inter-generational experiences of involvement with police and the courts. Some of my young people have difficulty imagining a life without crime, or believe they will follow in the footsteps of their parents, and therefore the concept of hope for a different future is an important part of my work. If they do not hold hope for a different future, it does not matter what supports or interventions I explore with them, their ability to achieve change will be limited. I believe this concept is essentially same within the mental health space.

I work with the person so that they can identify their own personal strengths and abilities to help deal with the current situation - this in turn instils hope for them. It is good to remind the person of past difficulties where they were able to use strategies and supports to get through rough patches. Instilling hope allows the person to believe in the possibilities for the future while at the same time encouraging them to move forward in a positive way.
