The team, in addition to sustainability, has other visions that complement our project, such as inclusion. In this way, we reached a consensus: to act in the field of assisted mobility, where, unfortunately, the main aid item (wheelchairs) remains difficult to reach for a large part of the population, essentially due to their high cost.

For all this, the team's mission focuses on reuse (obeying the principles of reverse logistics) and the social purpose of helping with accessibility!

• We believe that the reuse of electric scooter constituents will lead to a reduction in the amount of polluting waste released in the process of disposing of them, which in turn will contribute to the quality of water, soils inhibiting risks to public health and ecosystems.

2. Raise awareness among consumers about environmental issues to adopt more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, as well as raise awareness and promote environmental and social awareness among customers;

3. Creation of a production system that not only adopts the principles of reverse logistics, but also takes into account the affordability of consumers:

• We aim to democratize the reach of these assisted mobility devices to all people with reduced mobility, as well as to promote their inclusion.

4. On a personal level, participation in a project of this nature fosters the development of transversal skills (Project management, personal development, teamwork and communication skills).

What moves us?

• To recycle the components of electric scooters, which, taking into account their short life expectancy, require a solution for their reintegration into the market.

Our idea:

• Creation of an electric propulsion aid, that is, an electrical adapter that fits manual wheelchairs.

Project objective:

• Comply with UNESCO objectives as we apply a sustainable line of production.

Team objective:

• Learn from each other, grow as a team and be there to support the project so that it gets better and better.

Although the tower is the simplest component in terms of structural complexity, the tower has the function of supporting and elevating the entire structure, so it will have to be built for extreme environmental situations and having a sense of the height at which it will be.

The rotor, in the figure represented by the rotor hub and blades, is the mechanism that transforms the energy of the wind into mechanical energy transmitted directly to the shaft. For both large and small wind farms, the major development involves the optimization of this component and in particular the blades.

There are two basic types of wind rotors: vertical-axis and horizontal-shaft rotors. Rotors differ in their relative cost of production, efficiency, and the wind speed at which they have their greatest efficiency. Horizontal shaft rotors are the best known and the most used due to their greater efficiency.

Tripod rotors are the most widely used for large-scale electrical power generation that are driven only by the sustaining force.

Inside the cabin is where all the other equipment present in a wind turbine is located, thus functioning as an "engine room". In addition to the equipment shown in the image in which the brakes, gearboxes and generator are represented, the cabin also includes the measuring instruments (sensors), the control and cooling system and the directional guidance mechanism. It is in the cabin that the mechanical energy is transformed into electrical energy through the generator. The wind direction sensors in conjunction with the guidance mechanism have the function of aligning the rotor with the wind direction.

This product would allow greater incorporation of materials belonging to end-of-life scooters. It would be aimed at a target audience consisting of people who have to do remote work or who have to be constantly on trips related to their employment.

The model of the product was created in AutoDesk and we decided to do it with this format, since it can be similar to a piece of furniture, which makes it more appealing. Its combination of colors and the difference in formats gives beauty and exuberance.

In the middle of our product, where the hyperboloids are located, the batteries would be located, responsible for ensuring the supply of stored solar energy to the houses during the night.

First, they showed us around the company's offices, where we started our conversation. They started by presenting a little about the company and its purpose, which, contrary to ours, does not focus on the manufacturing of the product, but only on installation.

With this, they were very careful to explain that installing the entire system is difficult and expensive and therefore we should just focus on the production and installation of our product. To install the rest of the system, such as the solar panels and the inverter (mentioned later), the most accurate and profitable choice would be to form a partnership with companies in this field. They then introduced more details of the photovoltaic system. As solar panels are a set of photovoltaic cells, they harness the energy of sunlight to directly create a difference in electrical potential at their terminals, producing a continuous electrical current. This current flows through a solar cable whose final destination is an inverter, installed inside the house. If we want energy to be stored in the scooters' batteries, we cannot use a simple inverter, otherwise all the energy not consumed by the house would go directly to the public grid. Therefore, the hybrid inverter will be the best option, as it will allow energy to be stored in the battery, when the household's consumption is satisfied. In addition to distributing energy throughout the house, battery and network (in this respective priority) through usual cables, the inverter transforms direct current into alternating current, to be sent to the house. The battery, which is installed together and interconnected with the inverter, remains in direct current and therefore a BMD (Battery Management Device) is necessary, which will allow us to control the charging and discharging of the battery.

Having understood all the concepts of the photovoltaic system, we move on to budgets. What is the average price of a battery was an extremely necessary question that worried us, as we knew it wasn't going to be cheap. However, we were told that batteries do have a high cost, but it is a fair value, given the role they play. To provide us with more concrete values, the Engineers showed us sales graphs, in which on average the batteries most similar to ours, with a capacity of 5 kWh, were around €4000, which pleased us as this value plus the price of installation and VAT were within our product price.

Finally, and with the basic learnings for our product, we went to discover this company's warehouse. With the warehouse we were able to have a better perception of dimensions, as well as the organization of the sections of the photovoltaic system products, in order to facilitate access.

In short, with this visit we were able to understand the connections and components that we will need in addition to our main product, the prices at which we can sell our product within this market and some of the dimensions and organization that we can adopt in our company.

The objective of this study was to understand, on average, how many scooters should be removed from the street in a short period of time, and that they can be used as our raw material. To carry out this study, each member of our group analysed the battery percentage of eleven scooters, to compare the kilometers that they can travel with that battery and thus determine which ones are at their end of life,and which must be removed within a short period.

This study allowed us to come to the conclusion that there is still a large percentage of scooters that are close to the end of their life circulating on the street.

To organize the results, our group proceeded to create a table in excel.

After a meeting with Engineer Rodrigo Calçado, where we were able to share the essence of the project and our ambitions and planned features for the product, the professional advised us to develop a fan with a vertical axis instead of a horizontal axis.

This feature helps to optimize the wind collection process, meaning that with a vertical axis the fan becomes more sensitive to small intensities, producing energy whenever possible.

Each customer will have an account, and in the home menu they will have the option to log in using their username and password.

After registration, the customer will enter the main page, where they can access information about the product, such as consumption and performance.

In addition, they will also have a page that allows the user to contact our company to resolve any problems or answer certain questions about the product.

Orthos XXI encompasses a great variety of systems of production as well as machinery to operate them. All of this settings serve as a goal and inspiration for our project, given that Orthos XII has a respectable size in the national industry of assisted mobility, as we expect to grow to a leader role in terms of producing wheelchairs for animals and, eventually, export our product.

Furthemore, the knowledge we gained from this experience has served as a guide for the tasks we were given after the visit, as we consulted the notes we took from it several times with great utility while we were working on the very different task we were proposed reagarding the first Integrated Project of the Engeneering and Industrial Managment course we all attend.

Its geographical location was also a factor that encouraged us to choose the park, as it has excellent accessibility, being close to the A7 and A28 highways (11 km), Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (10 km), the Leixões Maritime Port (18 km) and the Leixões Rail Terminal (18 km). This proximity is essential for the transportation and shipping of our product.

Although our electric scooter supplier is located in Braga, a distance of 64 km away, transportation is facilitated by the proximity to the freeway, which makes it easier to transport our product. Parque Industrial da Maia a good midpoint between our supplier and our distribution. distribution.

Implementing solutions for the future and demonstrating that everything can be reused and transformed is one of our principles.

As we are students at the University of Minho, and this project was proposed by them, the team thought it best to implement the university's acronym.

Based on the CORELAP results, we obtained a factory space where the sections most linked to production are on one side, and those that are essential to the operation of any company to another, with offices and facilities on the upper floor, meeting room, in the space on the lower floor corresponding to the entrance and the store, occupying the factory, therefore an area of ​​625 m2 (25x25m).

The scooter's stem will be integrated vertically into the deck, serving as a passage for the cables responsible for the connection between the battery and the motor. A bushing and a rotation shaft will be placed at the upper end of this rod, connecting it to the horizontally incorporated part. The rotation shaft allows our product to operate over a wide 180-degree area, significantly increasing the product's efficiency and versatility.

This integration also acts as a channel for the wires connecting the battery to the motor, providing an efficient and organized solution.

The rod is connected to a circular metal surface at the bottom, with a structure surrounding both the motor and the chuck. At the bottom of this surface, a core holder with a coupling and a drill bit are strategically placed, playing a crucial role in the threading process.

In addition, the rotation axis allows our product to operate over a wide area of 180 degrees, significantly extending its efficiency and versatility. This intelligent, integrated design aims to provide an effective and useful user experience. As our company is pioneering the commercialisation of this product, which will have a domestic use, we expect many benefits and market opportunities.

Red - Material Flow

BatteryReVive will implement a production line using the flow shop model.

It is common for waste to be generated in the processes of a production line, in the case of our company, the waste mostly comes from the disassembly area (section 2). In this section, some components of the electric scooters that are not suitable for our production system are dismantled, such as the brake lights, the engine, the wheels, the bell, among others. However, all these materials will be boxed and sent to the warehouse area, so that they can be sold to the respective brand or private customers and thus be recycled. Selling these products gives these products a new lease of life, whether as a component of a new electric scooter or as a component of a new object.

Other components of scooters, such as the display, screws, batteries, electrical wires and aluminum, will be reused and used in our product, “Electrical Energy Storage”.

Resource consumption reduction strategies:

Natural resources are increasingly a target of distress due to their increasing scarcity, which is why there is concern about reducing their consumption. As such, BatteryReVive thought out in detail and strategically how to reduce energy and water consumption in the processes integrated into the production line.

Although there is no process that works directly with water, workers in the welding and painting areas are constantly getting dirty. So, so that you don't always have to wash your hands, you will use washable gloves and suits that only need to be washed every 3 days. Furthermore, in terms of energy, the company's workers will always have to readjust the machines and only turn them on in circumstances that justify their use.

Reduction of pollutant emissions:

BatteryReVive wants to pay special attention to reducing pollutant emissions, as it is essential for a lower environmental impact. Therefore, we seek to reduce both the use of products and the chemical processes that are necessary throughout the processes of our production system.

The first example of the sustainable method used is in the product disassembly section. The main component we use in electric scooters are the batteries, although some may have one battery or another that is not functional. When this happens, the respective battery is replaced with another that is operational. Although the problem has been resolved, the damaged battery unfortunately has no chance of having a new life, and throwing it in ordinary rubbish causes a lot of damage to the environment, due to the highly contaminating fluids it contains. So, whenever workers detect a non-functional battery, they will place it in a specific box. This box at the end of each week will be taken to Rede Eletrão, a national company specializing in the treatment of batteries and household appliances.

Each EES is made up of eight batteries organized in sets of two units, forming four groups interconnected by cables. This strategic arrangement provides optimized storage capacity, ensuring efficient retention and distribution of accumulated energy. The shape of our product is innovative, we adopt the shape of a sheet hyperboloid. Each hyperboloid "base" accommodates two of the four battery packs, allowing for balanced and effective distribution in space. We provide a 3D image of our product to facilitate the understanding of this visual design.

Compared to lithium batteries often found in electric scooters, such as those from Bird and Lime, which have typical capacities between 300 and 500 Wh, equivalent to 0.3 to 0.5 kWh when new, our EES offers considerably greater storage capacity. This guarantees substantial and reliable support for residential nighttime energy demands, increasing energy efficiency and autonomy for end users. We anticipate an energy capacity of approximately 0.25 kWh when reaching approximately 80% of the batteries' useful life. With this, the set of eight batteries would reach a total of 2 kWh, which would double the average nighttime consumption of 1 kWh per family in Portugal, according to data from EDP. This energy capacity would make it possible to fully cover this daily consumption, demonstrating the viability of batteries as an efficient and suitable source for residential energy needs.

It is therefore considered to be a revolutionary product on the market because, while on the one hand it meets the mandatory requirements of a standard wheelchair, on the other it contributes to the environmental sphere, which, given its social relevance, adds value to the product.

Next, we wanted to place the departments in the deployment taking into account the TCR calculations carried out previously, thus obtaining a blueprint of our system. According to the high TCR value, both the initial warehouse and unloading and the final warehouse and loading would have to be placed in the center of the layout, however, this arrangement proved to be impossible since the loading and unloading of goods face significant obstacles, making the operation difficult. So, taking into account the criteria of the CORELAP method, we came up with the following sequence for allocating the different sections: initial warehouse and unloading - final warehouse and loading - dismantling - weaving - assembly - packaging - plastic recycling - tube treatment - painting - WC + changing rooms - WC - offices - reception - leisure area.

With this, three possible layouts were developed and we finally concluded that the score for the best layout was 100, and this was the one we chose (with a total area of 552 m^2).

The company chose to rent a warehouse measuring around 850 m^2 for a total of 3500 euros per month. However, the factory division of the different sectors necessary for the production of our product will only occupy 720 m^2. The 130 m^2 will be used for parking.

The best way to promote our product and our work is on digital platforms. Therefore, we decided to create a blog.

On the blog we intend to:

• Highlight the features and reasons why people should purchase our product;

• Show the continuous evolution of the project, giving readers an in-depth look at its development over time;

• Clarify the most common doubts related to the project, maintaining transparent and accessible communication;

• Establish a meaningful connection with users, sparking their interest in the project;

On the first day, we met our tutor, teacher Susana Costa. We introduced ourselves eachother and discussed our future path in this project.

During that week, the team began by discussing possible products from end-of-life scooters. Later, after several discussions, seeing positive and negative points of all products that we "put on the table", we reached an agreement, the creation of a Workspace.

After much reflection, the company´s name was created, "Ecovista".

2nd week

We quickly started organizing and distributing tasks in order to optimize all the time we had and not overload any team member. Some members wer responsible for creating the company logo, others for the PowerPoint and script for the first apresentation and the rest ones for managing the blog and social networks.

We brainstormed ideas about the materials we would use in our Workspace. We talked and wrote the advantages and disadvantages of all selected materials.

Finally, we carried out a photo shoot to post on social media.

3rd week

This week we could meet our student tutor, Luis Gonçalves, who introduced us to various resources for the project, from communication to sharing media files and much more. The tutor spoke briefly about his experience as a egi student.

We met on Wednesday morning, dividing it into two moments: one where we clarified some aspects related to the future of our project with the tutor and another one where we gathered just the teams and organized ourselves for the rest of the week.

4rd week

In this last week of September, we decided to get together and start by talking about everything that went well and everything that went less well so that from that moment on we could improve.

Additionally, we created a survey about our product, Workspace, so that we could study the target audience.

We analyzed the characteristics of the materials we would use for the Workspace, taking into account various criteria, such as production and acquisition price, quantity, quality of the material, resistance and aesthetics.

In the first two weeks of November, the team did a lot of research on some topics related to Calculus task 3, namely how to calculate surface areas and volumes of revolutionary solids that we had previously drawn with the help of the “geogebra” software. Furthermore, we went to the library to request Calculus books to help with the task, which was due on the 10th. In the Algebra task, which was due on the 12th, the team had to establish fixed and variable costs. All topics related to costs, matrices, values ​​in general were planned so that in the end the Workspace would have an affordable price for the user and, at the same time, the company would make a profit.

3rd week

In the third week of the month, the team was asked to present Project Networking, referring to the interviews that, in groups of 3, our team members carried out. This project aimed to better understand the profile of two professionals in the EGI area and bring students closer to the reality of the EGI profession.

Furthermore, this task also helped us create contacts with EGI professionals, which could be very useful in the future, more specifically when entering the job market.

4th week

In the fourth week of the month, on Wednesday, the Algebra teacher talked about the assignment previously given, giving us very useful tips. So, after the conversation, the team decided to go back to this and rectify some mistakes to later send it back to the teacher.

In this first week of October, we had the task of the Calculus, Programming and IEGI curricular unit (UC) to deliver, more precisely on the 4th, 5th and 6th, respectively.

The Programming professor proposed research on the usefulness of software for companies and their production management, and asked us, at the end of this research, to prepare a document with very simple words about what to learn.

The calculation task involves solids of revolution with the packaging of our product. So, we started thinking about possible packaging for the product, however, as Workspace is already seen as packaging, given that it is a suitcase, we spoke to the professor at the respective UC, who suggested a part of the suitcase that we could associate to some solid of revolution, having chosen the handle of the suitcase.

IEGI's task was to ask us to specify the product, production system, units to produce per year, production process, production factors and general implementation for the production system, serving the company's areas. Just this week, the team traveled to the company "Mecwide" to meet with Mr. Engineer Carlos Alves, with the main topic being metal, which will be used on the outside of the Workspace in the future.

2nd week

In the second week of the month, we started discussing the dimensions of the Workspace product. We wanted something that would be comfortable for users, that would be easy to carry, but that, at the same time, would fit all types of computers, for example. The 2nd presentation was approaching, it was about 1 week away, so we decided to prepare everything, thus distributing different tasks to each team member.

3rd/4th week

In the third and fourth weeks of September, the team divided tasks among themselves. We also contacted several 3D printing companies for possible partnerships, however without success, as they did not meet our expectations.

On January 2nd, the team improved the final report, previously delivered and received with feedback from each teacher.

During this week, the team continued to work on the final report and carried out the last Peers assessment and we met with the teaching tutor Susana Costa to discuss some essential topics.

On January 8th we delivered the report and had the final presentation. The team prepared so that it would be a different and special presentation and we could end this journey with a bang!

On December 2nd, the team created a prototype made of cardboard to demonstrate the product's updates regarding design and dimensions. In addition, we prepared the programming and economic engineering tasks that should be included in the preliminary report. You can see some images at the end of the blog!

On December 3rd we delivered the preliminary report. This report contained all the tasks carried out by the team and appendices that we developed to justify choices and demonstrate ideas.

On day 4, the team met to debate and explore ideas regarding the final prototype. After the meeting we decided to order the suitcase and the necessary accessories so that we could go to the port, to repair mobility, and take care of the electrical part of the Workspace.

3rd week

On the 10th, we received the preliminary report from the team we were going to evaluate. That day, we opened the report and did a general analysis.

On the 13th we divided the tasks to be carried out during the holidays and each team member started working on their parts.

On the 16th, we already had task 4 of introduction to engineering and industrial management completed and we started updating the blog, padlet and Instagram.

4th week

The report of the team we were going to evaluate, team 6, was already finalized on the 18th. So, we started working on the final report, correcting some errors pointed out by teachers in certain tasks previously delivered and adding additional information.

Regarding the UC task of Introduction to Economic Engineering, we prepared a loan repayment table, material related to financial mathematics, as well as discussing certain information related to loans and effective and nominal rates in order to move forward with the task.

On the 20th, the team met at the university with the aim of creating the prototype. It was necessary to buy USB ports, a switch and a 12V to 200V converter. At the end of this blog, we leave some images so you can see the entire process.

On the 21st we went to Porto, to our partner company, "Repair Mobility", which helped us take care of the electrical part. The next day we added computer support.

5th week

In the fifth week the team created a script and started the powerpoint for the final presentation. Online meetings were held and discussions were held about what would be the most relevant information to present on January 8th. The team also completed the final report, which was delivered on January 3rd.

On our second visit to the company, the final prototype was assembled, what included making the electrical connections and the removal of unused cells from a used battery supplied by Repair Mobility.

These visits were extremely important for the team.

The technician helped us draw up the prototype and clarified certain doubts.

Since the aim of the workspace is to be easy to transport, the engineer suggested that we used the aluminum that Mecwide can't use for the outside of the workspace. To do this, the engineer suggested that we draw up a 3D digital prototype with the exact dimensions we wanted for the product, as well as the materials to be used for each part of the workspace, so that we could make a prototipe with Mecwide´s aluminum.

The products or services on offer are the main contributors to building this image.

Another component of the image is the brand. A strong logo or brand helps to identify a company and distinguish it from others. For this reason, 2Circle has thought about and considered in detail strategies for representing its corporate visual identity and digital branding. With these, they aim to stand out in the market for their creativity and their progressive approach to accessibility.

The 2Circle´S logo symbolically represents the combination of the desired characteristics and the business values mentioned above: the creative essence is embodied in the company's nomenclature, by replacing the "L" with an electric scooter (recycled raw material); the use of the circle around the brand appeals, by similarity, to the symbol representing recycling; the design of the number "2" invokes a road representing the route taken by 2Circle's end-of-life electric scooters, which will emerge as a new product: a wheelchair!

The team has been in frequent contact with the aforementioned company and it is considered to be 2Circle's parent company, as it has supported us with information and data relevant to a large part of the project (for example: the incompatibility of the materials of the electric scooters and the children's wheelchairs, which resulted in this option being discarded).

In addition, 2Circle relied on its efficient and renowned production method to design a significant part of its factory layout, thus enabling the execution and development of this project.

This choice was due to the fact that this location is 25 km away from Lisbon, about a thirty-minute drive. We chose Lisbon as our supply location because it's the city in the country with the highest number of scooters per person and also on the European podium along with Brussels, Helsinki and Paris.

As we're going to produce in low quantities, we've established that the company's area will be 600 square meters

We proudly label ourselves as a Green Factory because waste reduction in the manufacturing environment and sustainability are constant priorities in our facility. Among various features, our factory boasts LED lighting installations throughout, functioning in conjunction with motion sensors for maximum energy savings, and Photovoltaic Panels to supplement power needs. Additionally, our factory is equipped with thermal insulation for additional energy savings, significantly reducing heat losses through dissipation and thereby decreasing its overall energy footprint. Regarding emissions from the manufacturing process, Onwards will incorporate an advanced exhaust system to minimize greenhouse gas emissions to the fullest extent possible.

However, a factory is not complete without its workers. With this in mind, Onwards does not overlook their needs and strives to facilitate their work, commutes, and overall well-being. Aligning with our ecological vision, Onwards ensures sustainable and green transportation for its employees, covering the costs of public transportation passes.

Furthermore, the factory layout and spaces reflect a genuine concern for the physical and psychological well-being of our workers, evident in features such as a Leisure Room, Patio, and parking lot for those commuting by car.

Recognizing that understanding demand and market positioning is crucial for optimal decision-making regarding resources and space, Onwards conducted demand studies, reaching out to companies with similar missions in Portugal and Spain. Notably, we contacted OrthoCanis, based in Barcelona, seeking more information on production quantities and the scale of our operations. These two countries, precisely, will be the initial focus of Onwards from a commercial standpoint, making these contact actions relevant and informative in the planning process.

Consequently, we looked for a new solution to be our solid of revolution. Upon reflection, the handle of a wheelchair was conceived by joining three functions, represented in figure 1. It is worth mentioning that each function has a defined domain: Dg = Dh = [0;10] ∧ Df = [10;11.1].

As such, a linear system was determined, consisting of 4 equations and 4 unknowns. In full, the four unknowns are total revenue, total and variable costs and the quantity produced.

With this, the team reached a consensus: for every 100 wheelchairs sold, 2Circle will donate 1 wheelchair to Médecins Sans Frontières, an international non-profit organization that offers medical help in urgent cases.

The costs associated with this social action would be reduced to just €1.80 per wheelchair (considering the 100:1 ratio and the market price of a standard 2Circle wheelchair - €180).

global.

We will use the electric motor from the scooter, which will be responsible for activating the drill, the battery responsible for supplying the electric current, the controllers that will regulate the speed and power of the motor, the deck that will serve as support for the battery of our product , the rod that will serve as a vertical support, the electrical cables and connectors that may be useful for connecting some electrical components of our product, the LED brake light that will be used to place the on and off button (in order to inform the user whether the tool is on or off) and finally we will use small parts such as bearings, gears, among others, which will also be integrated into the product structure.

Non-reused components

After market research, we found that electrical components can be valuable for people or companies that need spare parts, for repairs or for electronics projects, or even for scrap. Therefore, we consider it advantageous to sell the components that we will not incorporate into the product. Due to the fact that electric scooters are at the end of their life, the sales value will obviously be lower.

The components that will be sent for sale will be: the wheels, tires, the braking system, the bells, the steering system, the sensors, the displays and the control panel.

Ultimately, our objective will be for this entire material sales process to be aligned with our sustainability mission, that is, to ensure that materials are recycled or reused responsibly.
