In the novel, the Astonishing Color of After by Emily X.A. Pan, the main character, Leigh, demonstrates her moral dilemma of how to respond to Axel's email by her always talking about it, but never bringing herself to open in and just ignoring it. “Those emails. I pause because I’m not really sure how to frame my question”(Pan 443).

In the Astonishing Color of After it's important to note the social setting of Leigh's Family in Taiwan because of the impact, they have on the way Leigh thinks of herself and how she interacts with people.

The Astonishing Color of After addresses that although losses hold us back, we will always find love by Leigh being heavily affected by the loss of her mom and her finding Love again and moving on. “There's no point in wishing. We can't change anything about the past. We can only remember. We can only move forward.”

The main character, Leigh, showcases this idea when she and Axel get back together. Overall we see how Pan wants us to confront our pasts and face our futures because Leigh never wanted to accept her mom's death and was always wishing she was in the past when things were good but then faces her future and rekindles what she had with Axel.

This morel dilemma impacts the behavior of the character whenever she thinks or talks about the email it distracts her from her goal which finding the "bird" and finding out the truth about the past. These actions and " behaviors impact the plot and theme by Leigh never knowing what she really wants to do. Does she Want to Get Together with Axel and move on? Or does she stick to finding out the truth and finding the "bird”?

For example, it's clear whenever she talks about her own appearance, it affects the way she deals with things and makes her shy and insecure. “Back at home, sometimes people say I look exotic or foreign. Sometimes they even mean it as a compliment. I guess they don't hear how that makes it sound like I'm some animal on display at the zoo”(Pan 79). Leigh living in Tainan influences Leigh’s will to find the truth by having the conflicts happen right where she lives... in Taiwan.
