Monarchy is a government form where a single person has a hold of all the power. The word monarchy comes from the Greek roots; mono, meaning single, and arkhein, meaning rule. The connection between this word and Grecian politics is the fact that there were Mycenaeans (my-sih-NEE-inz) who ruled ancient Greece from 2000 to 1100 B.C.E., they were warriors who were also politicians ahead of their time because they envisioned a political system that would be used by many countries in the future.

Oligarchy (OH-lih-gar-kee) is a form of government which is run by a system where the direction of the state is in the hands of just a few leaders who each hold lot of power. Oligarchy comes from the Greek terms oligos and arkhein, which mean few and rule. The connection between Grecian politics and the word is the fact that in several Greek city-states, small groups of people began sharing a ruling power.
