Why were they important?
Hurston moved to New York City's Harlem neighborhood in the 1920s. She became a fixture in the area's thriving art scene, with her apartment reportedly becoming a popular spot for social gatherings. Hurston befriended the likes of Langston Hughers and Countee Cullen, among several others, with whom she launched a short-lived literary magazine, Fire!! 
Along with her literary interests, Hurston landed a scholarship to Barnard College, where she pursued the subject of anthropology.

Why does it fit in 20s?
At the time of the Great Gatsby colored people, like Langston Hughes, were emerging in art. African American began to explore their ability to write poems, draw and paint, create jazz and blues music, all which became popular in this time period. Although blacks were not getting everything in which America "promised", art was opening doors during the time period of the Great Gatsby.

Originally, upon moving to New York to get a job and marry Zelda, when Scott only got a low paying job, Zelda broke off the engagement. However, when he went back to Princeton and got his writing published, Zelda and him soon married.
What was F. Scott's motivation for his writing?
