Hi Everyone!

My name is Lauren Mills and I am excited to be joining the Mental Health and Addictions Health Promotion Team in the Central Zone to complete a practicum placement this summer for my Master’s degree. I grew up here in Truro, NS, before heading off to Western University for my Bachelor of Science back in 2016. I continued on after my BSc and am now currently completing my Master of Public Health (MPH) degree, also at Western. Throughout my MPH course work, I gained a keen interested in health promotion and public health policy. In particular, I learned much about the harms associated with alcohol use in Canada. This led to my interest in alcohol policy and regulation of substance use, which I hope to learn more about in the Nova Scotia context this summer during my practicum at NSH MHA. This fall, I will also be starting medical school at Dalhousie in Halifax, and I can’t wait to bring forward my public health perspective. In my future career, I hope to integrate public health and medicine in order to help ensure both populations and individuals can have the opportunity to live healthy and fulfilling lives. I look forward to the opportunity to connect and work with all of you on the MHA team this summer!

Lauren

Through the use of social media (Facebook, Twitter, Gmail account), I will develop a 10-week online presence by subscribing to various local alcohol establishments, in addition to popular alcoholic beverage brands.

This special service project will explore the ongoing demands for health education, despite evidence to suggest greater effect using a population health approach. There is considerable community demand for health education for the prevention of substance use despite evidence to suggest its limited efficacy. Given this research-practice gap, my host agency has expressed a need to provide evidence and information to community organizations and individuals who are advocating for increased drug education in Nova Scotia (Is this the intended audience? I’m open to your suggestions to make this meaningful!).

To achieve this goal, I will prepare a research paper outlining:

1) Why is health education the “default” or “go to” solution for communities looking to reduce the use of drugs and alcohol? Who is driving this demand?

2) Why do communities default to health education despite either knowing it is ineffective or in the face of evidence of ineffectiveness?

3) Who is driving the shift to more upstream work? Specifically, who is leading this shift?

4) How are communities helped to make the shift away from health education? What needs to be done to get communities on board with the shift away from health education towards more upstream work, including policy?

Hello Everyone,

My name is Kawaina Gordon my pronouns are she and her. I am from Jamaica and have been living in Canada for about 7 years now. An interesting fact about me is that I am currently learning Korean. I hope to visit Korea one day and immerse myself in this beautiful culture. My hobbies include learning and exploring new languages and cultures and expressing myself through different forms of arts such as poems, dancing, and drawings. Some examples of these hobbies are:

· In Jamaica, my teacher gave me this project. I had to write a poem or any creative piece, I wasn’t really inspired by anything. I started to think about my mom and everything she’s been through and still manage to be constantly worried about me. The link was the poem I wrote, there is a line missing which I believe also make the poem. https://www.poetryinnature.com/poem/the-wind/

· When I just started high school in Canada, I was connected to an amazing group of students. The attached link is us performing for multicultural night at our high school. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YF27aFHS5jc

· And a drawing I did https://docs.google.com/document/d/1M974-UrNEh2ji9R6e9_3_vKG_SpGHoz9r0XW0PT1Ioo/edit?usp=sharing

Initially, I started university enrolled in the Biomedical program at York University, then after two years in, transferred into the Liberal Arts program at Dalhousie University where I transitioned into Health Promotion. I have always been passionate about helping others and is intrigued by the different perspective on health that Health Promotion offers. I am excited about this opportunity not only because I will gain a new experience, but also because these are newly found interests since starting Health Promotion and would love to see my capabilities as well as my abilities to grow within this area.

Over the past 7 years since moving to Canada, I have experienced different challenges that have impacted my health, and with the help of Health Promotion, I was able to understand and overcome some of these challenges. I hope that this new perspective/experience enables me to help other immigrants and improve access to resources so that this community can better increase control and improve their health.

Hello everyone!

Hope you're all having an amazing week!

My name is Shania Badri and I am one of the new Health Promotion Interns who will be working with the wonderful MHA Central Zone team the winter semester 2022.

I am an international student from Surat, Gujarat in India. I came to Canada in 2018 to pursue a Bachelors in Health Promotion. I also recently completed the Honours Program (HPRO) in which I worked on a scoping review on the "Psychosocial impacts of Irritable Bowel Syndrome in women" with Dr. Becky Spencer as my supervisor. Additionally, I am also pursuing a certificate in Disability Management as part of my program. My interest in mental health and addictions is based on personal experience and my keen advocacy for it is portrayed in most of my work which is why I felt this internship would be a great fit for me. My goals for this internships are to improve my knowledge on issues related to mental health and addictions, develop professional skills, participate in team projects, and to make most of this experience as I can.

This semester, under the guidance of Rose Walls, my supervisor, I am interested in dedicating my special service project to addressing the mental health impacts of the affordable housing crisis in Nova Scotia on international students. For my long-term goal, I plan on pursuing medicine in Canada and hope to write the MCAT as soon as I complete my internship.

A few of my hobbies include dancing, singing, and painting. I make great Chicken Biryani and Indian Chai. I am really looking forward to collaborating and connecting with everyone on the MHA HPRO team. I look forward to having a successful internship this semester 😊 .

Have a wonderful day!

Best Wishes,

Shania Badri

Let’s Talk ACB Immigrants’ Mental Health

The COVID-19 Pandemic has affected us all in more ways than one. Due to systemic barriers and discrimination African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) immigrant communities experiences higher disadvantages in society including infectious rates.

Upon further research I realized that there was little to no research coverage on this topic in Nova Scotia. I also learned that the leaders of our health systems initial approach to the pandemic was to use a colour-blind method. Although my paper does not cover the initial approach to the pandemic, my focus has shown the significant impact the pandemic had on the mental health of the ACB immigrant population. In addition to that I have also shared important recommendations to implement to improve the mental health of ACB immigrants.

Some important recommendations:
1. Implementation of race-based data collection:
Despite the initial approach, it was shown that a colour-blind method to the pandemic does not fix the inequities rather ignore them. Nova Scotia has finally decided to implement race-based data collection in spring of 2022. This approach not only shows the different inequities that these communities face, but it also shines a light on the presence of racism currently present in the Nova Scotia health care system.
“You CANNOT fix, what you CANNOT see”

2. Connecting with community organizers:
Connecting ACB immigrants to community organizers will enable immigrants to integrate better into society. This will improve the overall health of these community members as well as create financially stable communities. Although the YMCA and ISANS does have these resources available, there are numerous barriers such as lack of access to information. These barriers not only increase disadvantages within communities and the outside community, but also increases violence within the homes as well.

3. Promote cultural sensitivity within the healthcare sector: while one major issue to accessing mental health services is the lack of representation, the overarching theme behind this barrier is the lack of trust between patient and healthcare worker and the healthcare workers lack knowledge to cultural aspects.

A more in-depth approach would focus on implementing an overall cultural competent healthcare system, where the different levels of competency would be introduced to healthcare workers. These levels are:
a) cultural knowledge
b) cultural awareness
c) cultural sensitivity
d) cultural competence

A link that provides more information on cultural competency:
https://www.glenguyton.com/2019/09/11/promoting-cultural-competence-in-the-workplace-understanding-the-difference-between-cultural-competence-and-awareness/

In summary, the COVID-19 has shown that Nova Scotia is far behind in understanding the impacts of the pandemic as well as systemic barriers within the ACB immigrant communities. Hopefully with the start of implementing race-based data, more interventions and different approaches will be implemented to address the different systemic barriers and the existence of discrimination within the Nova Scotia healthcare system as well as the rest of Canada.

I have to say that I am greatfull for the work being done by Dr. Barbara Hamilton-Hinch and Dr. OmiSoore Dryden.

My interest in the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on ACB immigrants sparked from personal experiences. Where I, an immigrant myself has experience mental health impacts due the COVID-19 pandemic. During this period, I felt isolated and had lost all social support and connections. On top of this I experienced discrimination due to the colour of my skin. Despite being aware of different mental health resources accessible through my school and work, I did not access these resources due to fear of judgement and lack of understanding from the healthcare worker (HCW).

My initial interest focused on overall immigrants, but after further research, I learned that the ACB immigrants communities are at great risk but little to no research covers this community.

Hello everyone, my name is Keshirat Adeyemi-Taiye (she/her) and the newest member of Mental Health and Addictions (MHA) Central zone. I am originally from Nigeria and moved to Canada to further my studies. I was initially a science (biology) major, and I found that I was more inclined to the health field and that made me apply for health promotion. I am currently in my final year of Health Promotion at Dalhousie University. A dream of mine will be to travel around the world and learn about different cultures. My hobbies include listening to music, trying new food and restaurants.

Mental health was a topic I never thought of or talked about with other people due to environmental and cultural belief but travelling to different countries made me see different attitudes of people and culture towards it. I could see the stigma and negative beliefs people had towards the topic. Studying in school expanded my knowledge and changed my own point of view. I would like to learn more and help other people who have limited knowledge at MHACZ and add my own experience and point of view to the work. I am so excited to learn from everyone.

Hi everyone,

I am happy to introduce myself. My name is Sasha Colley I am from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, with connections to the Preston township and Metis roots. I am in my final stretch of completing my Health Promotion degree at Dalhousie University. I am happy to have the opportunity to be doing my internship with Nova Scotia health, Mental Health, and Addictions. I have chosen health promotion as my career choice due to my deep connection with working with youth and seniors over the years. I have been involved with my community coaching cheerleading for 13 years. I also had the opportunity to collaborate with seniors teaching them technology. My future career goal is to work the education system helping youth as they transition through the system, with a focus on the BIPOC community.

Interesting things about myself are I have a black cat named Reya; I am an ambivert. I do not like spiders, tall buildings, and at times the winter. Trail walks, sitting by a lake or the beach are my favorite ways to de-stress and connect with nature. One major goal of mine is to take a road trip across Canada and visit Asia.

Hi everyone! My name is Emilia Fitzgerald (she/her), and I am from Truro, NS. I am in my final year of the Bachelor of Health Promotion (Honours) program at Dalhousie University, and am very excited to be completing my internship with the Mental Health and Addictions Health Promotion team.

I recently completed my honours project, under the supervision of Dr. Debbie Martin, titled “Participatory Indigenous Health Research in Atlantic Canada: A Scoping Review Update”. This has led to my interests in equitable community engagement practices used in health promotion, and how we can use those to build supportive, inclusive environments. I also have interests in school mental wellness and engaging youth in meaningful ways. I am currently in the process of applying for a Masters of Health Promotion, planning to continue my work with Dr. Debbie Martin.

Outside of academics, I love to be involved in the university and wider community. I am a member of the Truro & Area Community Health Board, and several societies at Dal. Beyond this, I love camping, listening to music, going to the beach, and am trying to be more crafty this year!

I’m really looking forward to learning from and working with everyone this semester!

Hi everyone! My name is Leah Ladouceur (she/her), and I am a fourth year Health Promotion student at Dalhousie University. I grew up in Ottawa and have since moved to Halifax to receive my undergraduate education. I have fallen in love with the amazing community, incredible costal scenery, and professional opportunities that Nova Scotia provides.

I am fortunate to be completing my internship with the Mental Health and Addictions Central Zone team at Nova Scotia Health Authority. My interests and areas of scope focus on accessibility and equitable access for people with disabilities. Previously, I have engaged in work and academic experiences that have increased my commitment to community-based approaches to health promotion. My undergraduate Honors thesis focused on increasing physical activity in Nova Scotia communities for people with mobility-related disabilities. I have also worked as an educational assistant supporting children with ASD in school environments. I am eager for the opportunity to combine my academic knowledge and experiences with hands-on learning, and contribute meaningful initiatives that promote inclusive and supportive mental health services.

Beyond my academic background, I enjoy a variety of hobbies and recreational activities. On evenings and weekends, I spend time going for runs outdoors, attending work outclasses, and reading new books. I am so excited to join this amazing team and am eager to see what this semester provides!
