It consists of three things:
Threats, Aggression, Submission.
Typically the behaviors occur in that order depending on the interaction between the two animals. If the animal receiving the threat doesn't back down or reciprocates the action then aggression follows in the form of a fight. Whoever the loser is then becomes submissive and backs down from the dominant animal.

Many social behaviors are adaptive. This agnostic behavior is adaptive as it allows animals to show dominance to the other. The animals will begin by fighting and the one that wins is shown as dominant where as the one that loses is to be submissive.

What do you think the benefits of social behavior are as a whole are for living things?

I think the benefits of social behaviors are that they benefit the animal's chance of survival. For example, when you work in groups as compared to by yourself you have a better chance of survival due to the fact that it is hard to defeat many of you rather than just one. I believe that this is a benefit because it allows the offspring of the animal that possesses such better "fitness" to learn better chances of survival.
