The show focuses on single mother Alex as she fights to escape her emotionally abusive relationship and protect her daughter Maddy. This show stuck out to me because it at first Alex was in denial about her abusive relationship, believing that abuse always has to be physical.
Alex , to her counselor Jody, when being sent to a domestic abuse shelter : "I'd really hate to take beds away from somebody who's been abused for real".
Jody: "abused for real" What does that mean?
Alex: "Beaten up. Hurt"
Jody: "What does fake abuse look like? Intimidation? Threats? Control?"
