I say that because having parents from Monterrey, Mexico means that I was also partly raised there as well. 

I went to school in Mexico until the middle of 2nd grade. I began school in the US in the second half of the year. Knowing only Spanish was a difficult task. With no Bilingual Education at that time, I was immersed into the English language. I knew it would be sink or swim. I learned a lot from my friends and also helped my parents with translation since they knew little to no English. 

Growing up in Dallas and going to DISD schools helped me become who I am now. 
I’ve now been in Education for over 34 years in a variety of positions. Teaching, mentoring, Reading specialist, Assistant principal, Bilingual/ESL specialist, Early Learning Specialist and most recently a Biliteracy Cohort Leader for the Texas Reading Academies at Region 10. 

Being a lifelong learner is what we need to instill in all students.
