The organisation started because of the student activist movement in France in the 1960s. They were angry because of the silent role that the International Red Cross played during the Holocaust. In 1968, a small group of French doctors, including Bernard Kouchner, joined Red Cross to provide] relief to Biafrans who were trapped by the Nigerian government's blockade during the civil war. Kouchner and other people witnessed what they thought was  a genocide committed by the Nigerian government. They were angry that Red Cross remained involved so they decided to start MSF. And thus, Doctors Without Borders was created on the belief that all people have the right to medical care regardless of gender, race, religion, creed or political affiliation, and that the needs of these people outweigh respect for national boundaries. there are a specific set of rules that every MSF member must abide by. The MSF Charter principles include:
1. Humanity - all people have equal value and dignity; right to receive and offer humanitarian assistance
2. Impartiality - non-discriminatory assistance provided solely based on need and proportional to needs and suffering
3. Independence - assistance provided in a way that does not further a particular political or religious standpoint
4. Neutrality - non-participation in conflicts, directly or indirectly
5. In Nicaragua, 1972, there was an earthquake that killed 18,000 people and 40,000 people were injured and 200,000 were left homeless. The photo/post below shows MSF's setup in preparation for treating the victims that were left wounded by the earthquake. Currently, MSF/Doctors Without Borders are working to help refugees flee the war, persecution and poverty. In addition, MSF teams are responding across Yemen to provide lifesaving care to the affected people. Not only are teams being sent to Yemen, many other teams are in places such as Syria, South Sudan, Central African Republic and Iraq. Doctors Without Borders have also created a Youtube channel where they post videos about their missions and medical experiences in the different countries that they’ve visited. The organisation also posts on social media which generates more attention and support for their cause. Furthermore, MSF send doctors and nurses to places where the most help is needed. It is sponsored by private donations as it is a non-profit organization. One of MSF'smajor accomplishments was when they first introduced 3D printing for prosthetics and that advanced medical technology incredibly. Not only that, MSF built a hospital in Tasnimarkhola and they provided medical assistance to refugees and they provided treatment of war-wounded people in Taiz. In addition, in 1982, Malhuret and Rony Brauman (the presidents), introduced fundraising-by-mail to MSF in order to collect more donations. Furthermore, in December 1979, after the Soviet army had invaded Afghanistan, field missions were immediately set up to provide medical aid to the mujahideen, and in February 1980, MSF publicly denounced the Khmer Rouge. MSF also set up numerous nutrition programs during the famine in Ethiopia that lasted from 1984-1985. The organisation also set up equipment to provide/produce clean drinking water for the population of San Salvador after the October 10, 1986 earthquake. Finally, MSF have helped in the research and prevention of so many illnesses. They helped develop and test vaccinations for malaria, AIDS, meningitis and cholera.

In addition, this organisation is politically significant because it helps those whose human rights are violated. In the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it says that everyone has a right to proper healthcare and the basic aspects for survival. Many people who live in areas where there is war, lack the essential materials and supplies for survival. MSF ensure that injured people are treated and by helping victims, they are protecting the people’s right to health care. MSF was created because they wanted to help people in distress (e.g, refugees and victims of natural disaster). In addition, the founding members believed that people in distress had the right to medical intervention and that need should be provided regardless of border issues. Finally, MSF believes it is necessary to speak out about injustices no matter how a government might react. One huge contribution that MSF has accomplished for society is when they helped in the research and prevention of so many illnesses. They helped develop and test vaccinations for malaria, AIDS, meningitis and cholera. Without MSF's help the development of cures and vaccinations would have been much slower and more people would have been subject to the illnesses.
