For most people, the colour yellow engages a single sense, which is that of sight. Yellow can be bright in colour or more toned down but to me, it always remains the most beautiful colour. I cannot taste, smell or touch yellow and it cannot be heard. But it engages sight which leads to varying perspectives.

I perceive yellow to be representative of happiness, joy and love. I took this picture because I always have yellow things with me as it brightens up my day. My perception of yellow is unique because I associate it with everything that I love, including my darling cat, Ophelia.

A Clock - Lizelle de Beer

To some, a clock is merely indication of where they should be or where to be next or what should have been done by a specific time. I have a clock in every room of my home, Its pretty much been our family thing for ages. (Unfortunately I couldn't get all my clocks off the wall for the pic but I sampled). I can hear it, I can see it and I can feel it. I just cant taste or smell it. A clock only stops working when the batteries are drained.

I perceive a clock as, every second, minute and hour that goes by is a second, a minute and an hour to be grateful for. Its time that should be used and not wasted, it should be time spent well. Spend it with family, friends or even to try and do good by our communities. It also indicates that there is time in the day to learn something new even if the something new learnt is that your Childs favorite doll is "Elsa" - Family Time is an important part of my life.
There is a time to be happy, to be sad, to live, to be thankful for and also time to take a break... Like a clock that needs to replace his batteries from time to time, the human is very similar. Every person reaches a point where they need to recharge the body, mind and soul. I Quote: "An empty lantern provides no light, only self-care is the fuel that will keep your light shining bright" ~Unknown
Time for self-care is important.
Everywhere I go, I travel with my grandad's pocket watch. There is always time in a day and we choose how we want to spend it! Whenever its quiet around me, each and every tick I hear on the clock, reminds me of my 3 beautiful daughters and that I need to be thankful. Every tick is like their hearts beating, I am grateful for their health and they are my life.

It does not really have a scent to it so, smell is not a sense.

This cactus reminds me of my dear friend as she was the one that gave me this cactus. I sometimes forget about it since, it is small and does not really give much of a presence in my room. However, even if I do not give the cactus much attention, it is still healthy and growing. I perceive this cactus as a representative of our friendship. Even though, we only talk and see each other every now and then, we still have a strong bond.

Although I cannot really taste, smell or hear it, I am able to see and touch it. Not only can I physically touch crystals but also receive feelings of positivity and awareness. I find amethyst to be one of the most beautiful crystals to look at due to its colour (purple is my favourite colour). I perceive this amethyst to be one of the many things that have contributed to my spiritual growth.

Ceres Secrets of the Valley juice

Hey all you legends,

Jarrad, here. Just a little bit of context quick:

Here in the UAE, getting this juice is almost like contraband. There’s one store that has a range of South African goods, but it isn’t cheap, and it isn’t close. Needless to say, it’s worth it for me because it reminds me of home.

I hear the cracking of an unopened lid. A slight eagerness for what is to come. The magenta liquid stirs with tiny bubbles in the glass. The light shifting its tone from purple to red. Condensation slowly sprouts until two drops join and run down the glass. Wet and chilled to the touch, juxtaposing what my skin felt seconds prior. A strong base of cherry is smelt followed by light wafts of kiwi. The first sip is the best sip – refreshing and attention-grabbing. Chilled, it rolls past my lips with velvety softness, there are tones of berry-ed citrus and notes of kiwi. The sweetness makes me thirstier – there is a dryness to the aftertaste. The taste reminds me of faded holidays, when I was a boy, on the beach with salt and vinegar rolls and afternoon napping. I never used a cup or glass and the subtle taste and sharpness of the plastic lid. I remember sharing a carton with new rowdy friends. Having to swirl some juice to wash the sand out of my mouth. I remember a frozen minute of who would receive the last sip.

Hello Everyone,

Some may be wondering, "SPD? What on earth is SPD?"

Sensory Processing Disorder.
Loosely summarised, it is the term used to describe a phenomenon (for lack of a better word) where an individual's brain has difficulty in receiving and responding to information that comes in through the senses.

I often wonder what it must be like to experience the world in this way...

I wonder, because my child experiences the world in this way. He has hyperesthesia, and even just a whiff of oats causes him to throw up.

He needs sensory regulation, and what you see in this picture is one of the regulatory aids that I've made for him. It engages all the senses, and we spend hours playing with it.

I can smell it (because I have scented, but even if unscented, it has a smell), I can see it and I can see all the different colours (as well as the different shapes and sizes) of the grains. I can touch it and feel it between my fingers and my toes - and in the picture, I can feel it on my head too. It actually felt quite nice :-)
I can feel the different textures - some are smooth, and some are rough.

I can hear the sound it makes as I pour it from one measuring jug to another, or as I swish it around in the tray. It sounds a bit like rain or a rainstick, and the rainbow colours are beautiful and visually pleasing, as they fall to the ground and mix.

You could taste it if you really wanted to - it is edible - although we don't eat it in his form.

These grains lead to various perspectives - for some it is perceived as a tasty accompaniment to a dish, or even an essential main ingredient to a meal. For others it is perceived as a staple food when you are having to stretch every cent. Perhaps it is even perceived as vile to some, as it conjures up childhood memories of being forced to eat what was put on your plate, despite it being something which your palate could not tolerate.

I perceive it as an invaluable resource in our lives in every aspect. It brings my child so much joy, which in turn, brings me so much joy. Playing with it, playing together, connecting and bonding with each other. Watching, as he immerses himself in it - literally and figuratively.

I perceive these grains to be representative of calmness, regulation and contentedness to name a few - and the different colours and shapes mixed together reminds me that we are all different in many aspects, but we can live harmoniously.

Salty Chips - Lara Valenti

When I think of sensation and perception I think of Simba salt and vinegar chips. I know this may seem like a bit of a strange object to choose but let me explain.

TASTE
The moment I open a packet of Simba salt and vinegar chips, my taste buds immediately begin to tingle. Before I can get one chip into my mouth, my taste receptors have sensed what is coming. The chips are salty and almost sour, bursting with flavor.

TOUCH
The Simba packet is smooth on the surface yet sharp on the corners. When I put my hand into the packet, I can feel the ridges on the chips and the crumbs of salt on my figure tips. As I place the chips into my mouth, I feel a crunch as my teeth break down the chip.

HEARING
As I open the packet of SImba chips, I can hear the pressurized air in the bag release. The packet makes a load noise as I crinkle it around. When I place the chips into my mouth and begin chewing, I can hear the crackling sounds of the chips breaking down.

SMELL
The moment the packet of chips opens, the smell of the salt and vinegar is potent and I think that is the reason my taste buds immediately begin to tingle.

SIGHT
The Simba Packet is electric blue with a metallic shine. I can see the brown lion on the front of the packet as well. The chips are dull in color, a pale yellow should I say.

The reason I chose this object is because it stimulates all five of my sensory organs and it was the first one to come to mind, probably because my body associates the chips with sensing.

I see a cross it feels rigid as you move your fingers over it yet soft as its made from black strings woven together to form each knod into the next, each pattern and i know by the details, it took a long time and effort along with knowledge and skill,

I dont always feel it against me but I can sense it there, has a mixture of smells, perfume and body wash that reflects cleanliness and yet again ties into the deeper meaning of the object itself. I am sure it might not have a significant taste in the beginning but now will probably taste like soap :) . as I move the cross move twisting turning along with my posture but i can't hear it, but to me the significance are that once purpose and movement doesn't always have to be proclaimed but move in silence towards your goal.

as we can see it has a lot more than meets the eye, its perceived as a symbolic signature of hope, love, kindness, good will and so many more based on our knowledge and own life experience and is a very good example of how my sensations moves into a deeper perception

Bitter Sweet: Gin & Tonic - Lonwabo Thinta

Hello Everybody, so I didn't get a sense that there were any limitations as to what we could post about. So I took the very brave move on posting about my favourite taste sensational drink, Gin & tonic. :-)

This drink is certainly not for everyone, its bitter yet sometimes you can strawberries and other fruit infusions to bring out a certain sweet taste but let me unpack this for you.

Gin, gets its unique flavours from juniper berries and was originally made by the monks and alchemists for medicinal reasons. Which explains the taste and the fact that it is probably not for everyone.

SMELL & TASTE: Funny enough for ME, gin doesn't really smell like anything. I think it is part of the reason why I enjoy it. It pure and clean as opposed to something like whiskey which has a strong woody caramel smell for me. Mix the gin, Tanqueray with tonic and slice a lemon then the bitter smooth taste becomes pungent. The bitterness at times gives me heartburn I will admit, but there is something absolutely refreshing about this drink on a hot summers day. The sensory reaction is a happy chemical explosion in my mouth.

From a top down processing perception aspect, my brain certainly processes this taste and interprets the sensation as after 3 glasses my brain starts to wonder and act a fool. This is where sensation meets perception meets regret. :-)

So naturally hearing is the first sense on our list of the three sensory experiences whilst starting to play the guitar. There’s just something about it’s sound that can be formed from a warm fireplace effect to an upbeat mood lifter. The second sense is touch, we experience this as we push down and play on the strings. For the first time, the somewhat irritating calluses might come from playing for a while. It affects the way we press the chords due to the sensation in our fingers and the chords are harder to control, so automatically, the sound isn’t quite where we want it to be. This is a super crucial time where we need to play through the rough beginning stage. When playing becomes more natural, and sound becomes clear, the sense of sight is introduced at a stage where our muscle memory takes over to play. We can close our eyes, follow the feel of a song, and then somewhat see the colors of the music. In the end, you might lose feeling in your fingertips from time to time, but the experiences are worth the little sacrifice.

Quinten van Blommenstein

Good morning all! Hope you had a wonderful weekend. I sure did. Ready to hit the road running. Literally...

I chose the ocean. The phot attached was taken on my run/hike up Lions Head last week Monday. I love the ocean, it is beautiful and scary at the same time. I know not everyone love the ocean but it ticks all the senses:

One can TASTE the ocean, it is salty.
You can TOUCH the ocean, it is pretty cold in Cape Town. but for some living in Durban the ocean is lovely and warm.
You can SEE the ocean, and what a magnificent sight it is.
You can definitely HEAR the waves crashing.
And of course you can SMELL it. Sometimes when it is misty you smell the ocean all the way where I live in the Northern suburbs.

The reason I chose the ocean is because it is free for all to experience. And we should appreciate the ocean.

Have a great week all.

As I sit and work in my study, I can hear the gentle rain falling outside. From crashing thunder this afternoon, the rain has settled into a gentle and soothing sound. The sound the rain makes when falling on our tin roof, reminds me of so many warm and intimate experiences we have had in this house as a family.
With it, rain brings a sense of well being and peace. It is almost as if all of the worlds problems can be solved by the rain.
Crisp clean scents arise from the garden and the rain washes away all the troubles of the world. The mint bush outside my window, is especially fresh tonight, with a very soothing and crisp aroma.
My feet are becoming cold and uncomfortable as the earth soaks up the rain.
What is needed is a hot bath to alleviate the uncomfortable feeling of the cold seeping into my body, followed by my warm and soft bed.

Hi everyone. Trust that you have had a blessed long weekend.

As i was pulling out of my driveway on Thursday morning, a delivery guy from my company pulled up. I was to receive a certificate at some point, but it being the last day prior to the long weekend distracted my recollection.

In any event, i was handed a black box and an A4 envelope. The envelope was thin but firm. Judging by the weight and firmness, i understood the envelope to contain a protective cardboard and thus a document of some importance. I understood without having to peer that this was the expected certificate.

Although being a rather ominous colour, the black box was wrapped with a ribbon. I realised that this would most likely be a gift. That old sense of excitement washed over me. I shook the box, attempting to understand what the contents could be. I was not able to make heads or tails as the audible clues prompted no recollection in me. Damn you effective packaging! My curiosity finally overcame my self imposed guessing game and i opened the box.

Reflecting back on all this, i performed this mini life moment while my car stood diagonally across the street and while the delivery guy was walking back to his car. Luckily no cats were killed.

The Mole

I have a mole. An ugly little bumpy brown thing on my arm. Sometimes there is a tiny golden hair growing out of it, sometimes the hair is gone.

I can’t say that I like it, but it has been there since forever. I see it daily (it’s definitely growing bigger), I feel it a lot. For some reason my right hand always meander towards it and for no reason touches it. I am sure I can lick it, to taste it, but it will be a mixture of creams and perfume, so I would rather not. Smell it? No I can’t.

BUT…

This mole has a sensory meaning. A Big One. For a Special Person.

My sisters’ boy. He is blind and autistic.

His biggest pleasure when he comes to visit, is to touch this specific mole, and when he does, he smiles…. And he says: Tannie Lucy, in a dreamy way. He identifies me, with this mole. As if this mole describes everything about me as his auntie. To his senses, this mole speaks about everything he holds dear about me. Please note, autistic children does not eagerly touch things nor like to be touched. I remember when he was small, the doctors advised us to brush him with a special brush in order for him to develop his touch sense. We also had to carry him around, in order for him to develop balance and decide from where sound waves comes from. A lot of his senses where hurt by autism and partial blindness.

But not his memory. He remembers. He knows exactly where to find my mole, left arm, near the bend of my elbow. His fingers finds it easily. He touches it for a few seconds, and walks away smiling and content. His other needs, of being loved, feeling safe and cared for has been nurtured by the single touch of my ugly mole.

This kid is made of light. He is light. Bright, white, perfect light.

Vision, seeing, is light bouncing off objects, picked up by nerve endings and letting your brain “read” the image. His sense of vision may be severely impaired and his sense of touch damaged, but this boy sees more than any able bodied, fully “sensed” person I know. He does not need light being bent by his eyes, his whole being reflects light. To see and meet him, is truly a “vision”.
