Begin the compare and contrast of the story of Rapunzel and the movie Tangled. Each student will be given a Venn Diagram to fill out while we read the story and watch the movie. We will read the story first. The story of Rapunzel: http://images.scholastic.co.uk/assets/a/93/6d/story-of-rapunzel-111110.pdf Once we have finished the story I will use the smartboard and my laptop to display the movie Tangled from Disney Plus. As we watch the movie they will take notes on their Venn Diagram. They will need to pay close attention to list several ways they are similar as well as the ways they are different. They will need this information for their power point presentation at the end of the unit.
During this lesson we will begin to work on our ELA goal of making connections between the text of a story and a visual or oral presentation of the text, identifying where each version reflects specific descriptions and directions in the text.

Each student will be given a ping pong ball to be used as Rapunzel. Each student will be given $50 in fairy bucks to buy all the materials they will need to build the tower and the escape. They will each have one opportunity to shop at the Fairy Tale Store to buy everything they need. There will be no trades or exchanges for materials among students. It will be impossible to calculate the cost to build the tower or the escape if there is trading and exchanging. Each student will be given a Fairy Tale Store sheet that will allow them to write down how many of each item they think they will need as well as the price per item. They will be able to add up all their materials to figure out if they will have enough money to build their tower and escape. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xox3BOO8D5HUjaVVw_aZaTs_Boq76u60ZW71kW6THwA/edit#gid=0
Each student will also be given a Rapunzel journal to sketch their plans and use during this unit for other activities. They may use their pencils, colored pencils, crayons or markers to draw out their rough draft plans.
Once they have a rough draft and a list of the materials as well as the cost they will have a check point with me. At the check point we will go over their plan and the cost of their materials. At the checkpoint I will remind them that this is their one chance to buy all the materials they need. I will give them their materials in exchange for their money. If there is time and enough materials left once everyone has shopped I may reopen the store for those who still have money left but there is no guarantee that their will be time for another round of shopping.
During this lesson we will be focusing on our math standard using the four operations to solve problems involving money. We will also be working on our science standards that we are focusing on in this unit.

During this time the students will build their towers and escape. Once they have completed their tower they will need to use a ruler to measure how tall they made their tower. They will then need to record that in their journal. Once the tower is complete they can begin to build their escape. Once they have completed their escape with the ping pong ball they will begin their first trial. They will need a stop watch to time the amount of time it takes for their ping pong ball to land on the ground. After they have completed the first trial they will record it in their journal. They can now change their escape to try to make it faster or more efficient. They must record each change to the escape. The students will need to have three successfully timed trials recorded in their journals. They will add their times to their graph to show if their changes helped improve or damage their time. At this point they will be at checkpoint 2. They will meet with me to show me they have completed three successful trials and show me their bar graph. I will give them an Ipad to record a video of their escape. They will also take a picture of the tower and the escape they created. These will be needed for the power point presentation. During this lesson we will be working on our math and science standards.

Power point creation and presentation. Each student will need to make a power point and present it to the class. A page with their video of the escape. A page with their chart showing their trial times. The presentation should be organized, be given in a clear loud voice with eye contact with the crowd.
This lesson will use technology, as well as the parts from the ELA , Science and Math standards.
