Now One Foot, Now the Other by Tomie dePaola

This book is great at giving a childhood story. It is about a child who is named after his grandfather and spends a lot of time with him as a he grows up. His grandfather taught him how to walk, told him stories, and played with him. When his grandfather became sick due to having a stroke, his health decreased. Now that Bobby was older, he remembered all his grandfather did for him as a young boy and he taught his grandfather how to walk, told him stories and played with him.

I think the subject matter is extremely relevant because it teaches students how to take care of their elderly adults. The young boy was able to mimic what he saw his grandfather do with him. I enjoyed that part because it showed how as grandparents they take care of us when we are little and as we get older we become capable to take care of them. When his grandfather told him to tell him the story about how he taught him to walk and Bobby replied, "Well, Bob, you leaned on my shoulders and then i said 'Now one foot, now the other.' And before you knew it ...", it was amazing to see how Bobby was able to help his grandfather in the same way he helped him as a child. Bobby and Bob's bond was able to grow deeper because they were able to help each other in similar ways.

The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? by Mo Willems

The story starts out with a little duckling who makes a request for a cookie. When he gets the cookie, the pigeon comes and questions him about it and gets frustrated because he never gets what he asks for. the pigeon displays anger and the duckling is nice enough to offer the pigeon the cookie hoping that he is able to get another one soon.

I enjoyed this book. One critique about the book is I wish it was reiterated that you must ask for things nicely before people can give them to you. It was mentioned by the duckling once but I think it should have been said again in the middle of the story. The duckling said, he asked of the cookie "politely". At the end of the story the duckling was nice enough to give his cookie away and I think that shows kind gesture but it doesn't tell the students before people may give you something you must ask nicely for it. Even when the duckling told the pigeon he could give him the cookie, the pigeon still went on ranting before he realized that the kind duckling was going to share with him. This book had a little of a surprise ending because the duckling was nice enough to give his cookie away to the pigeon.

Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come! by Nancy Carlson

The book is about a mouse named Henry about to start his first day of kindergarten. He is very excited to go to school and in the book it shows his excitement. As he says he is ready for school, his mom reminds him of everything he needs to do before he can leave. On his way to school, Henry and his mom make predictions as to what he will do in class on his first day. When he gets to kindergarten, he was nervous because of all the new faces. Once his teacher allowed him to look around, he begin to see fun activities that him and his mom were talking about and even made new friends. He then became excited about kindergarten again.

I think this book is great for children who are just starting kindergarten. The children can relate to how the mouse feels in the story. I am sure most kids that start kindergarten are excited but also nervous because its a new environment that they are not use to. This book doesn't really display a surprise ending. It is a more realistic situation making the ending to be suspected.

The book gives information about a wedding the characters are off to. There is a cow that is off to a wedding and along the way, she finds other friends that need help getting there. She allows each friend to hop on her back and go with her down to the wedding. At the end of the story we find out that the cow is the bride to the wedding and all of her friends played a big role in her special day.

The book gave great visuals and the illustrations were very colorful and detailed. I enjoyed the rhyming in the book and it using more complex rhyming words rather than simple one like cat and hat. This particular book did not have a specific message just a book for fun to read. Although there was no message, it did have a surprise ending by the cow saying, "I'm the bride".

They didn't listen to her much until she yelled it was a fox. When they found out what the animal was, they became frightened.

I think the book is great for younger children. It does a lot with repeating what each character says and also names the animals throughout the book. For example, the lines good grief, well well, who cares, so what and what next are said by the same characters. By keeping repetition throughout the story the children are able to repeat and also remember some of the words and who says what.

The book explains the life of a young boy and his village. They were on the way to take gifts to the king but the boy was poor and didn't have any fine gift to take to the king. He thought that maybe if he played his drum for the king, that would be enough.

I thought that the book was a little fast pace. The sentences in the book were very short and with very little detail. It was like you had to use your imagination in order to get the full concept of what the book was about. I think the story could connect with some children because not all children are born into wealthy families. In the book the boy says, "I am a poor boy too, I have no gift to bring". Resources for him were very low and for some children that is the same at home. I wouldn't say there is a surprise ending in the book. However the boy did the best he could by using the resource he had, playing his drum, in order to have a gift for the king.

The book gave a great idea as to who Martin Luther King was in another setting. The son said in the book, "Away from home, things were different". In the book he spent much time with his children by bonding and playing with them. A lot of his conversations were ones he had with them. It showed a few scenarios how he explained to his children the racism was going on and how they themselves were effect but they knew that their dad was doing all he could to fight not only for their rights but all African Americans.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was great to see Martin Luther King Jr. in a different light. The book focused on what he did and how he was with his family. It was great to see most importantly, how he was with his children. They had a very strong bond and I thought that he was a great father to them. Him and his wife tried to make sure they were positive role models to their children to allow them to have a good future. I think the story moves at a great pace and I found the book to be a surprise within itself because we saw this legend in a different setting. The subject matter is extremely relevant because he is a historical figure and it is definitely a book I will read in my classroom.

This story was about a little field mouse named Nicolas who goes on a hunt to find berries to eat. Along the way he has man adventures such as being taken by a crow to nesting with a family of birds. When he finally met back with his family, they were upset about the crow trying to take him but they were happy to know that the other bird and her family took Nicolas in like he was her own.

I enjoyed this book. It has very bright illustrations and a great concept to the story. I thought the book gave a great positive message. The book showed that just because you have one bad interaction, you can't judge everyone from it. The Uncle in the story says, "One bad bird doesn't make a flock". Just because Nicolas had a bad experience with the crow doesn't mean that all the birds were going to be mean to him and he quickly learned that. He understood that from the difference in interactions. I think the book gives a good message to share with students because it goes well with the saying, you can't judge a book by its cover.

Fables by Arnold Lobel

The book gives many short stories throughout the book. Each story has a different message from the other. The stories are told using animals as the characters and given in unrealistic settings. Although the stories are told to be fiction, they all have a special message written at the end. The fables are only a page long. However, they have good detail and the pictures give good visualization as to what is happening in the story.

I think this is a book where you would want to read a fable for each day. I don't think it is a book where you want to read from back to back. I do like how the book at the end of each story gives one sentence to tell you the message. For example, the fable The Frogs At The Rainbow's End, is about three frogs who believe that at the end of the rainbow was a cave filled with gold, diamonds and pearls. Once they got into the cave the realized that was not true because there met a hungry snake instead. They were then eaten by the snake that lived inside the cave. The message at the end of the story was "The highest hopes may lead to the greatest disappointments". The message gave a reflection to the storyline. Allowing this book for older children to dissect the meaning of the story and the message would be a great tool to use in the classroom.

The story focuses on a young boy who walks home on the trails. He meets a paleowolf that is interested in his tasty treat that he has with him, some Woolly Rhino Ribs. Along the way the wolf followed him. The boy did not want to share his bones in the beginning but when the wolf saved his life, he begin to care for him more. He knew that the wolf wanted to protect him and for that he was thankful. He made sure to reassure the wolf that he will give him anything he wants and brought him home.

I think the book did a great representation of sharing and trust. In one sentence the boy Kip shows how he trust the wolf and would also share with him. He says, "Wolfy, if you will use your keen nose and your fine ears and your sharp eyes to keep me from being eaten up, I promise to share with you all the Woolly Rhino ribs and even Mammoth meat that I cook over my fire". He showed in just that sentence that he gained trust in the wolf because he knew that he would protect him and he understood the meaning of sharing. I think this book can connect with children because many children have pets. A lot of kids that do have pets love their pets very much and have formed a special bond with them.

The story is about a young boy who has friends who love their parents. Each friends parents have different careers and rules. He gets the chance to experience those rules when he goes to visit these families. He talks about the differences in what each family has and how he wish he could do what they do. In the end he understands the love he has for his parents and what all they do for him and he said, " I wouldn't trade my parents. I KNOW they're the best" !

I loved this book because it has so many connections. It gives great examples of different career goals each family has. It has realistic jobs and gives value to all of the families regardless of what career they are in. I liked the fact that it also talks about parents and how each family can be different. How the rules of each family may work differently from one another.
