Nurses should understand the importance of educating those with a low health literacy level as their literacy level typically correlates with their overall health status. Patients with a disease so fragile, such as diabetes, have a variety of concerns which must be understood (diabetic foot care, wound healing, follow up eye care, etc.). It is the duty of a nurse to ensure a patient's understanding.
