Traditional Indian male costumes can also be used to create a monkey costume.The man wearing the headdress will be King Louie. I understand this is traditional clothing, important to the culture. When creating the costumes, this should be kept in mind and be respected. I wanted to use it in the show to appreciate it, not to make fun of it. For female monkey costumes, skirts can easily be made by students, and afterwards be dismantled into usable pieces of fabric for Ms. Andi’s class or future costumes. The long cloth part would likely be just a piece of fabric, which can be repurposed in the same way. For monkey costumes that don’t have skirts, they could wear closely colored pants of their own, as it would likely be too difficult to sew. With that they could wear a shawl made from the fabric as the skirted monkey costumes, and repurposed in the same way. The fabric would have to be bought for uniformity, but will probably be easy to find and cheap because it only needs to be a solid brown or gray color. I was thinking that only human kings wear crowns, and King Louie wants to be a human, but he can’t, because he’s a monkey. I think that if he wanted a human crown, he would have to make it himself, and that probably wouldn’t turn out great. This particular design is made entirely out of pasta and pipe cleaners, making it quick, simple, and cost efficient to make. The banyan roots will probably be made from paper mache and paint, and attached with hot glue. The thistle will have another green umbrella with a purple puffball on top. The puffball could be made from fabric, maybe the same one Shanti’s saree is made from. This is probably not the most sustainable idea, because everything but the atual umbrellas will be thrown away. The umbrellas would then wait in storage for someone else to use them, or be given away. But, I think it might be worth it because I know the role of a tree can be kind of undignifying.
