For the students' final project they will work together with teacher assistance to create a Kevin Henkes-inspired class book in which each student is featured and depicted as a mouse character in the story. This project will require a combination of all of the literacy skills that have been addressed throughout the unit.
1. The class must collaborate to come up with an alliteration for the title of the book.
2. Students will compare and contrast their own character traits with those of other students in the class and depicts these differences within the class picture book. Each student will illustrate a page of the book depicting themselves as a mouse character and helping the plot along.
3. The story must include plot elements including main events, problem, and resolution.
4. Adjectives must be used accurately throughout the story to add describe characters, events, etc.
5. A personal connection to the text must be evident in the theme of the story. (Something that they believe other 1st-grade students can relate to.)

Born in 1960, Kevin Henkes has always been known to enjoy two things: art and literature. He combined these passions through his career of writing and illustrating children's picture books. Henkes was first published shortly after his first semester of college at the University of Wisconsin. One of Kevin Henkes' most notable achievements was winning the 2005 Caldecott Award for his picture book Kitten's First Full Moon. Since then, his portfolio has continued to grow and his memorable mice characters have warmed the hearts of children across the country.
